Pop-Up Gallery
A cool inner courtyard, an abandoned cabinet-maker’s workshop – for a few hours only the hidden location at the Naschmarkt will turn into a hip photo gallery! Photographer Susanne Stemmer, who lives in Paris and Vienna, produced an experimental editorial called Étretat. Created in the eponymous beach resort on the Normandy coast , the pictures show fashion by young, mostly Austrian designers. For one evening the photos will be shown in the pop-up gallery. Which will be opened four times a year in the future – on construction sites, in empty shops, at places of change.

Costume Flea Market
An insiders’ tip for people who are looking for something special: Theater in der Josefstadt will do summer cleaning and host a costume flea market for two days! About 800 “ treasures” will be on sale for peanuts: from €1 to a maximum of €30! Swinging dresses meet puffy underskirts, shoes with character flirt with well-formed hats. Here’s a tip: don’t forget to check the inside of the costume pieces (below the collar) – this is where you can often find the name of the artist who used to wear this piece. Otto Schenk, Sandra Cervik or even Elfriede Ott :-)

Lange Tafel
Vienna’s Tafel is an institution: food is saved from being thrown into the trash and instead given to people affected by poverty. Now the association is inviting everyone to the Lange Tafel event: a colourful street festival at Karlsplatz with picnic, music and readings. Everyone is invited to sit down at the “long table” and eat to the strains of MusikarbeiterInnenkapelle. People will bring the food themselves, beverages will be provided by Vienna’s Tafel. By the way, you’ll find more info on Vienna’s Tafel and an interview with Ulli Schmidt, general manager of Tafel, on the portal.

Käseschatztruhe
Slowly but surely our city is turning into a delicatesen sshop for cheese fans. More and more cheese boutiques open – and the newest addition is particularly nice. The shop itself practically consists only of a huge display cabinet, in which cheese sommelière Daniela Thaier has gathered selected specimen very carefully (mostly from Austria): Höhlentaler from Tyrol, hey flower cheese or Schwarzer Prinz (Black Prince) from cheese dairy Pranz. The owner knows every one of the small organic producers personally and can tell a tale for every cheese. Celebration of the opening is today!

As we know it is never too early to begin looking for and then forget about New Year’s resolutions. This is why a few wonderful and well-known musicians have teamed up to play everything at the “New Year concert” that you shall not cover. From AC/DC to Andre Heller, from Rio Reiser to Simon & Garfunkel to The Who. And now who are those members of the “family”? Actor and singer Manuel Rubey, the cabaret artists Gunkl and Votava – and Cathie Priemer is sitting at the drums, who also manages the breakfast salon Augustin by the way ;-)

Bloomsday
Now honestly: Who really read the entire 1000 pages of James Joyce’s “Ulysses”? Nobody? Doesn’t matter, we’re going to celebrate the possibly most genius prose writer in history anyway today on the occasion of the worldwide-celebrated Bloomsday. Nino aus Wien will serenade him, then there’ll be a reading from a passage of Ulysses, synchronously in several languages – among them Hebrew, Armenian and Greek. A musical performance will focus on Nora Barnacle, Joyce’s partner. And organic farmer Walter Eckhart will tell what role absinthe played in Joyce’s life during an absinthe tasting.

How Does the Crisis Affect Women?
Caused by brokers, speculators and property sharks: it’s no surprise that the current financial and economic crisis is often called a “ male” crisis. But how does it affect women? How did the roles of women change due to the crisis? Does the crisis relegate women back to old roles or did it also create new opportunities? In today’s discussion Katharina Mader from the Vienna University of Economics and Business and Ulrike Herrmann, board member of the daily paper taz, will talk about the repercussions of the crisis years, the effects of austerity programmes and gender dimensions of the crisis.

The Schöller Boardinghous
He who’ll have himself a good time needs to go to the outskirts, as we know. Today the best location to go to is Floridsdorf to the (pretty whacky) Gloria Theater. Under the direction of impresario Gerald Pichowetz, this has become Vienna’s best address for hot sketches. Today the comedy classic “Pension Schöller” (The Schöller Boardinghouse) will be played: someone wants to see the inside of a madhouse and ends up in a bog standard boardinghouse, which is also a little crazy, just as in real life ;-) The good-humoured company around Pichowetz comes up with one witticism after another. Good laugh guaranteed!

SHOEting Stars
Sneakers, high heels or moccasins? As is generally known, footwear tells a lot about the character of the wearer. That’s enough reason for Kunsthaus Wien to focus on the topic of shoes: the exhibition SHOEting Stars will put 220 wonderfully flamboyant shoe creations from international designers, artists and architects in the spotlight as of today. No surprise that most of these elaborately worked objects that give the impression of small sculptures are unique items. Apart from the works of shoe art, you’ll also find inspiring installations, photographs and videos.

Meditation Pictures
If you are looking for a bit of calm and silence this week, you will surely find at the Shambhala centre. Here you can admire (and buy) the meditation pictures by Nepalese artist Sonam Lama for 10 days. This artist, who was in contact with great spiritual leaders already early in his life, is the head of a painting school in Kathmandu today. Several monasteries in India and Nepal have already been equipped with strength-giving images and paintings under his guidance. By the way, Sonam Lama will also be present during the open hours of the exhibition and is there to answer questions and give advice.

wienzwoelf
Ahoy! Friends of Christian seafaring can now also spin a yarn right within the city. Not far from Haus des Meeres, the design team creates cool bags under the direction of Matthias Lippitsch, head of Kostümhaus: unique items made by hand. And they are made from kit bags with history – which are then combined with recycled advertising tarpaulins, water-repellent wool felt and sturdy fire hoses. Old parachutes are turned into “ secret compartments”, which can also be worn inside-out when there’s lack of space. The bags come in four different sizes: all of them sturdy and with lots of space.

Gedöhns
A pink plastic flamingo at Löwengasse? This surely piques one’s curiosity. The probably smallest restaurant in Vienna remains true to its style on the inside: stag’s antlers meet moderately integrated kitsch and art. This charmingly berlinesque x-small venue consists of four tiny tables and a bar with flea-market charm. The coffee is great and there’s some food too: beetroot ragout, goat’s cheese with stinging nettle or a green gazpacho with just the right amount of spices. The small menu changes daily – and the owner, German artist and pastry chef Wencke Pond, cooks everything herself.
