"Heya Girls!"
How we can be mistaken. There we think Christmas gluttony is finally over. And then, in only one week, tempting cooking lessons just drop into our lap and we almost start smelling the scent of soups and freshly baked bread. Losing weight will have to wait. And this is why: in the cooking studio Pause, we learn how to create enough energy for the entire day with a warm 5-elements power breakfast. In the Sonnentor Shop, we cook together winter-inspired Ayurveda recipes that warm from the inside out and are easy to make. At the cooking school “ich koche”, it is all about bread and pastries, where we can bake 6 sorts of pastries with Sauerteig & Co. And finally, cook Martina Lessing will reveal how to easily prepare fish. And for all of you who don’t fancy cooking, I throw in a wise sentence of Penelope Cruz: When a man cooks for you and the salad contains more than three ingredients, he is serious about you.
Wishing you a nice week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Wuaschd
It is probably the most Viennese of all places: the “Würstelstand” (sausage hut). On the one hand, melting pot of the Viennese society, on the other, cradle of the peculiar Viennese humor. There, cops meet lobbyists, school kids meet hookers and hard-drinking headmistresses meet old pimps, including annoying bums. The “Schmäh-factory” has finally (!) written this institution’s epitaph. In the Austro-rock-cabaret-musical “Wuaschd”, people sing, whine, howl – and, of course, laugh a lot.

Ring Road guided tours
Even Viennese people learn something new when Michael Schmid, author of the heavy tome in three volumes “The Viennese Ring Road”, plays the city guide. The occasion is the completion of his book project and the nearing 150th anniversary of the magnificent boulevard. Schmid shows it in a way we almost never see it: behind the façades and cribbed with little-known historical details. He leads us for 1,5 hours, the walk ends at Thalia. There we get refreshments and the author’s books.

Ice-skating with Viennese view
How about a trip to Vienna’s highest ice rink on the terrace of the Wilhelminenberg Castle? Since there is no snow, we can at least pretend it was winter. Up on the mountain, there is more than enough ice and romantic atmosphere, and on top of that, a great view over Vienna, free of charge. Ice stock sport and ice disco are also featured in “Wilheminenberg on ice”. And if it gets too cold: we can warm up comfortably in the Castle café. But only until 19 January!
Hotel Schloss Wilhelminenberg, Savoyenstraße 2, 1160 Vienna. Until 19 January Mo-Fr 14:00 to 21:00, Sa+Su 10:00 to 21:00. 5,50€. Web

Manuka honey tasting
Some things require hard work from the CitySpotterGirl, others simply fly towards her. Such as the first jar of manuka honey, that was brought to her from New-Zealand by a friend. This unusual honey from the other side of the world tastes incredibly good – but it is first of all medicine! The Maori already knew of its healing power. The honey’s strong antibacterial effect benefits wound healing, hinders infections and can substitute antibiotics. The Bienenlädchen gives information about medicine and nature today. And of course we will be able to taste the honey!

Lisa Berg & David Ruosch
Homesickness and heartache, with in between some blues and chansons in Georg Kreisler’s tradition. Those are the ingredients from which the Swiss duo Lisa Berg & David Ruosch blend their songs. There is Lisa, the jurist with a doctorate and a dark voice, and there is David, the piano all-rounder. Both have replaced their home, the not very romantic Lowlands of Zurich, with the big cities of Europe, while rocking tragicomic texts and a musical ride through the centuries. And this is how two concerts at Café Korb are made.

Inspiration Florida Hawaii
Yep, this puts you in a good mood! The water is blue, the sky shines, colours are bright: Carina Schubert carries you off from the cold Viennese winter to warmer climes. To Florida and Hawaii to be precise, where the 23-years-old artist has found inspiration for her pictures during her study trips. What came from that were prints, drawings and acrylic paintings that can be seen at the Amtshaus Wieden starting today. You can also buy pictures from these summer trips to jazz up your flat or office.

Chess club „Frau Schach“
May I introduce Frau Schach. Frau Schach is not just anyone, but a new chess club that keeps up and cultivates the game exclusively for women. Once a month, ladies meet to puzzle, gamble and simply just to have fun. The location today is the Cafe Schopenhauer, where Frau Schach will target the board instead of the cakes in the display. At 17:00, it is time for some relaxed coffeehouse chess, and at 19:00, pro Daiva Batyte gives tactical lessons. All ladies are welcome, whatever skill level they possess.

Resonances: Oddballs
They are unadjusted, solitary, often close to mad and usually brilliant. Creative oddballs are standing today in the centre of Resonanzen, the festival for ancient music. From 18 to 26 January, you can travel through time at the Konzerthaus and discover ancient and forgotten music styles and instruments. Today on stage: pieces by composer Gesualdo, who once murdered his wife and her lover. Also, not exactly as wild but a daredevil nonetheless: Oskar von Wolkenstein’s life will be put under the spotlight on the 25th in a moderated concert.

World’s largest gold coin
Australia has revolutionized the art of elegantly transporting money. Instead of a suitcase full of banknotes, they roll around oversized gold coins! The world’s largest, to be precise. Such an unusual record deserves a quick glance – after all, the thing weighs 1 ton. (Whereas the Austrian pendant only weighs ca. 31 kg). Besides, the “Red Kangaroo 2012” has a diameter of 80 cm and actually counts as official means of payment in Down Under. Uncle Scrooge would be thrilled! It can now be admired for 5 days at the Museum of Art History.

Inès Alaya
Now a real gem has opened round CitySpotterGirl’s corner! In this entirely white and minimalist boutique, Inès Alaya, Viennese fashion designer with Tunisian roots, presents her fashion: trousers, blouses and tops of streaming fabrics and in streaming cuts. Inès Alaya doesn’t work in collections but translates her ideas immediately into practice, which are then produced in small series (sizes 34-48!). Thus, fine silk hangs next to warm wool, from office suitable to elegant. Playful detail: the designer’s exquisite drawings adorning the display.

we love cakes
One way St. Pölten – Vienna and back. Claudia Lang lived in Vienna for many years before returning home and opening a fine cupcake shop in St. Pölten. And now, there is a sweet new branch in the Operngasse! The variety of tried and tested cupcakes is fluffy, the brownies are sticky and bitter. Apart from that, there is time and again unusual treats in the display, such as hazelnut-cinnamon-sponge with banana topping, roasted bacon and maple syrup. Two tables in this pink & white cake kingdom invite visitors to simply replace stress with a bit of pastel for once.
