Palais Coburg Winter Days
As Viennese, we won’t spend that many nights in the noble Hotel Palais Coburg, but why not treat ourselves to a fine after fork chill out session? The Coburg invites to winter days in the garden: roast marshmallows on open fire, enjoy eggnog and chilli-cherry punch, satisfy the small hunger with grilled sausages and potato pancakes, nibble hot chocolate and fragrant sweet “Pofesen”. Each Thursday and Friday from 4 pm. Cuddly blankets, open fire and warming sounds protect us against the cold – secluded on the bastion, but still in the centre of the town. Our one and only treat ;-)
Palais Coburg, Coburgbastei 4, 1010 Vienna. Until December 23, Thu + Fri from 16:00. Web

Cartoons about Christmas
If you could do with a free portion of fun in these cold and damp November days, you should do a side trip to the Gallery of Comic Art. There, it’s snowing sarcasm from now on: In the form of humoristic pictures and funny cartoons around the topic of Christmas. Famous cartoonists such as Hannes Richert, Rudi Hurzlmeier & Co answer all kinds of controversial questions - at least graphically. For example, how to put together a Christmas tree from Ikea. Or what would be the outcome if the Controlling team planned the X-mas party! And what will Santa Clause receive as a present from his fairies?
Komische Künste, MQ, Museumsplatz 1, 1070 Vienna. Vernissage December 4, 19:30. Free entrance. Web

PapierWespe: Advent Presentation
For years, it’s been all about the fibrous fabric of the papyrus in paper artist Beatrix Mapalagama’s studio. However, we are still impressed by the unique look of both the exhibited paper creations and the objects for sale. Today, four (inter)national artists showcase their skills: Stacy Brown from the UK impresses with huge Stalactites made of paper textures. Yu Feng from China presents artistic calligraphers. Harald Metzler and Simone Kunz are working a bit more handily. And: gorgeous unicums, post card sets and paper jewellery!

Macarons Baking-Workshop
People with a sweet tooth know it: Macarons are finest meringue-based confections from France. Embedded between two biscuits of almond meringue, a wonderful creamy soft filling emerges. Macarons can be found in a huge variety of flavours – and the small Viennese factory macaroom produces extra tasty combinations: elder-lime, Campari-grapefruit, maple-bacon-cream. If you have always wondered how those colourful delicacies are prepared, you can learn it today: two different flavours are baked together and participants can take them home.

Bonanza Christmas Exhibition
Luck is a piggy. Or a puffer fish. Cos in the creative gallery and ceramics studio many new figures and art objects are conquering the exhibition room from today on. Five Viennese ceramicists are presenting their latest trends on the potter’s wheel: Bibi Beranek’s cute girls in new, cheeky positions. Rosemarie Benedikt visits the zoo with owls, anteaters and elephants. And youngsters from the design school Herbststraße display funny animal-snouts-cups. And for the culinary pleasure, there will be wine, bread & biscuits. You can also try yourself in doing pottery!

X-mas Pop-up Grand Hotel
Noblesse oblige! Earlier it was the location where the Austrian nobility used to take to the floor – now, young fashion baronesses & design princes are selling their pomp & glory here for 2 days: the ballroom of the Grand Hotel. Be prepared for fashionably elegant pieces for example by Ferrari Zöchling and comfortable chic by amateur. And great golden feather decorations by Petra Hauser. The “Ringstraße” in form of a bangle by Wienring. Home accessories and furniture will also be there. And – an absolute must-have for the CitySpotterGirl: a pair of shoes by Natalie Rox! Flesh Dance
Umm, how should I explain this? What’s going on tonight is something like a poetry slam – but with dance moves and performance instead of words. The Dance Quarter in the MQ provides a stage for passionate professional performers, hobby dancers and junior artists. Using all their physical strength and creative power, they will get the crowd going at Austria’s 1st dance slam. Each music- and dance style is accepted and no act may last longer than 3 minutes. It is worth making an effort since the best show will be rewarded with 1,000 €! Open stage, open end: Flesh like muscle flesh, that is ;-)

Buschenschank End of Season Party
Writing these lines, I’m starting to feel hunger. And a thrill of anticipation. Jutta Ambrositsch invites to her Buschenschank in Residence one last time this year. She will serve a brand new wine, called “Himmelfahrt”, which might let you ascend to heaven, as the name suggests. And before it is sold elsewhere, you can exclusively taste and drink the wine at the Buschenschank. Of course, there will also be plenty of culinary highlights and delicacies to fill your stomach with before you start drinking. And witty pre-Christmas-surprises. All of it deluxe!

Academy Winter Market
Hot stuff! Like every year, the Academy of Arts presents itself in a super creative and slightly chaotic way – when the former Semperdepot is turned into a Christmas market for 2 days. You won’t find normal stuff here, but only unique items made by future artists and designers. In the evening, local bands, such as Drumbock & Beyond the trees will rock the yard. Plus, there will be great dance and drumming workshops of the NGO “Kama”, which supports migrants and asylum seekers and which will receive all proceeds. Bring a cake and change it for a free punch ;-)

American Lulu
The fragmentary original version of the opera of the Austrian composer Alban Berg is about the ruin of a stunningly beautiful lady who kills her protector. And comes under the knife herself in the end. In the new interpretation of Olga Neuwirth, Avant- garde composer from Graz, Lulu is a young black woman in New Orleans in the 50s. Just like the original character, she cheats and is cheated on, kills and turns men’s and women’s heads. But much more up to date – connected with interesting issues, such as racism and women’s rights! Olga Neuwirth decided to present the mythic female character from a woman’s perspective.

Happy Adventness!
Together with two colleagues, the exceptional actress and singer Linde Prelog takes her music and words-loving audience on a hilarious winter journey – with drums drumming and pipes piping. The native of Styria is supported by Margarethe Deppe on the piano and by Franziska Fleischanderl on the dulcimer. Or, to put it into the trio’s spoonerism: “hackgebrettet und celliert / wird Adventness zelebriert / Saitenklingend Wunder swingt / silberwortreich spricht und singt“. Amazing women. Amazing live performance. Take your best friend with you!

Danish Christmas Bazaar
The Christmas market hurly-burly is turning Danish on Monday! At the “dansk” Christmas Bazaar, it’s not the mulled wine that keeps our fingers warm, but the notably stronger Glögg, a schnapps-wine-mixture that really makes one tipsy! What else can we expect? Authentic Danish specialities to taste and handicrafts, such as Nisser (Scandinavian Christmas goblin) to buy. Well, then: Stop by and bring along a hyggelig (cordial) mood!

For cunning magpies! “Who does not love glitter & twinkle?”, Lilarum & Badeschiff Wien thought. And today they open a swap meet for second hand Christmas decorations for the first time. The baubles, bells & Co that ornamented your own tree last year, now change hands quickly in a cordial chat over a cup of coffee. And you swap it for your desired glitter junk. Pop-up-Store „Vintage-Stadl“
Just two years ago, the CitySpotterGirl regularly ate in his Manameierei. Now Osi Asali gave up his job in the gastronomy and, together with his wife Heidi, dedicated himself to his second big passion: vintage furniture. For three weeks, the passionate collectors are presenting and selling their lovingly restored finds, furniture rarities and designer treasures, for the first time in Vienna! In a marvellously beautiful backyard ballroom in the 9th district. Cool chairs, tables, lamps – as far as the eye can reach! The best would be to buy everything and to move in right away!

Novel: Auf Freiheit zugeschnitten
As a native of Seewalchen, it should have been the CitySpotterGirl’s duty to write a biography of Emilie Flöge. Now the German historian Margret Greiner has beaten me to it. She wrote a smart & interesting portrait about the visionary fashion designer, unconventional Klimt companion & successful business lady, who – with her salon Flöge in Vienna - influenced the zeitgeist at that time. In this book, the power woman finally steps out of Gustav Klimt’s shadows. Reading is today! Followed by a questioning & signing session.

Andrea Schröder
She sounds like a mixture of Nico and Hildegard Knef, is currently on tour with her 2nd album and will enchant melancholic Austrian’s hearts with her deep, wicked voice tonight - in her only concert in Austria. Her songs tell stories about big city life and the people in there. And – like “Ghost of Berlin“ (listen: here) or her new interpretation of David Bowie’s “Helden“ – they bespeak our constant to-ing and fro-ing and the search for meaning. Sounds dark. And so it is, somehow. But in a very cheering way.

Fiaker Milli
Her real name was Emilie Turecek. She lived in Vienna in the 19th century and was a notorious folk music singer. With her cheeky performances and her funny-frivolous songs she enthused the audience in the amusement bars at that time. Wearing a tight-fitting jockey costume and a riding crop (!) – both pieces required police authorisation, by the way. Gerald Szyszkowitz’ production, following the trails of the legendary lady, promises fun and jamboree in like manner: a mixture of song recital and theatre with Susanne Marik in the role of the passionate Fiaker Milli.

The choice is truly impressing and unprecedented in that dimension: fashion made in Austria! An estimated 1000 (!) collection items on an area of 300 m2 wait for fashionistas in the new, stylish fashion Mecca at Petersplatz. Or loose-knit and filigree 20s style pieces by Simon Barth. Plus, totally new, since 1 week only: Eva Poleschinski and Katrin Kafka.
