Journalism is being transformed by online media. The internet, and the technologies it supports, has given every journalist a new audience, but it has also changed the way the news business functions. The plunge in demand for newsprint is contributing to the surge in bankruptcies in the media industry, but opening up new opportunities for others.
At this remarkable moment in the history of journalism, as the media industry re-orients to cope with this transformation, the IPI World Congress in Helsinki will feature a panel on
“New Media and the Future of Broadcast News”. Panelists Jacob Weisberg, chairman and editor-in-chief of the Slate Group (photo left); Barkha Dutt, editor and host with NDTV New Delhi; and Atte Jääskeläinen, director of news, sport and regional programming at YLE Finnish Broadcasting Company, will discuss the future of the broadcast news industry in the face of the growth of blogs, citizen journalism, content aggregation, interactivity and other new forms of distributing information.
