Names in the News: IPI World Congress in Helsinki Continues Long History of Renowned Speakers
Dear Colleague,
For almost 60 years, the annual IPI World Congress has provided a unique forum for renowned journalists, politicians, academics and civil society representatives to meet and discuss important topics of the day. Over the years, speakers have included Dag Hammarskjöld, Eleanor Roosevelt, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Charles de Gaulle, Indira Gandhi, Jomo Kenyatta, Lee Kuan Yew, Willy Brandt, Carlos Fuentes, Wole Soyinka, Elie Wiesel, and Boutros Boutros-Ghali.

More recent speakers have included Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu, Lech Walesa, Boris Yeltsin, Al Gore, Shimon Peres, King Juan Carlos I, Mary Robinson, Edward Kennedy, Henry Kissinger, Christopher Patten, Peter Ustinov, Amartya Sen, the Aga Khan, Mwai Kibaki, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Boris Tadic.

This year, at the World Congress and 58th General Assembly in Helsinki, IPI continues this tradition with a line-up of more than 20 prominent speakers – including Joschka Fischer, former foreign minister of Germany; Peter Bergen, journalist, author and terrorism analyst; Jorma Ollila, Chairman of Nokia and Chairman of Royal Dutch Shell; and Indian TV journalist Barkha Dutt, among others – who will come together to discuss with IPI’s members and guests the great challenges facing our world.
