 Welcome by our President
Dear Members, Colleagues, and Friends of the ESMRMB,

It is a great honour and pleasure for me to serve as your new president. I am a neuroradiologist from Uppsala, Sweden, and I have worked with MR scientifically since 1984 and clinically since 1986. The mission of ESMRMB to promote the development and practical application of magnetic resonance in Europe is becoming increasingly important, since MR is growing scientifically as well as clinically. It is my personal opinion that our mission can be accomplished only by close collaboration between physicists, radiologist, radiographers and all others working in the field. The increasing membership of ESMRMB including these categories, now also offering a membership category for radiographers, is therefore close to my heart. This is also a time of increasing collaboration between different scientific societies with partly common interests. ESMRMB is, as you know, institutional member of the European Society of Radiology (ESR), we have a close collaboration with the ISMRM and we have several partner societies among the European/national MR societies. In 2013, we celebrate the 30th Annual Scientific Meeting of the ESMRMB. The first Annual Meeting was held in Geneva in 1984, and that was also the first MR meeting I attended as a young resident in radiology, why this year is special for me as well as for our society. Our 2013 Meeting will take place in Toulouse, France in October, and I cordially invite all of you to submit abstracts and attend the meeting. The chair of the Scientific Programme Committee, Prof. Xavier Golay and his team as well as Prof. Siegfried Trattnig, chairperson of the Education and Workshop Committee are preparing an exciting scientific and educational programme for the meeting. We will also continue our successful educational programmes, including the School of MRI, the Lectures on MR and Hands-On MRI courses, during the coming year. Our journal MAGMA is, thanks to your excellent submitted contributions and to our editor-in-chief Prof. Patrick Cozzone, continuing to convey new scientific results as well as updates on new MR techniques to us all. Molecular imaging will play an increasing role in research as well as for clinical diagnosis, and we will be involved in many ways, e.g. by the emerging PET-MR scanners, where we are happy to collaborate with PET-experts. I hope that we will become a growing European MR society and that we will meet in person at our annual meeting and at teaching activities and also via social media (we are on Facebook and Twitter).

I wish you all Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

With my kindest regards,
Elna-Marie Larsson
ESMRMB President

ESMRMB Congress 2012 - Review & Picture Gallery
The ESMRMB Congress 2012 was once again a huge success with a record high number of 857 presentations on-site. 1200 participants from 47 countries attended the past Annual Scientific Meeting in Lisbon/PT and contributed to its success!

Visit the picture gallery and download some memories from the past meeting in Lisbon!
ESMRMB Congress 2013 - Toulouse awaits you!
ESMRMB cordially invites you to its 30th Annual Scientific Meeting of ESMRMB to be held on October 3-5, 2013 in the beautiful city of Toulouse/France. The ESMRMB Meetings are the prime European forum for the interaction between basic scientists and application oriented clinical researchers in the field of MR.
The Scientific Programme Committee, lead by Prof. Xavier Golay, and the Local Organising Committee, lead by Prof. Isabelle Berry, have already been working intensely to prepare an exciting scientific, educational and social programme.

The abstract submission will be open in February. Abstracts can be submitted until the deadline: May 24, 2013 (12:00, CET).

Among Gd-based MR contrast agents approved for CNS imaging, gadobenate dimeglumine has the highest relaxivity. The impact of relaxivity on signal enhancement and the depiction of small or poorly enhancing lesions has been investigated in several comparative studies1,2,3,4,5 at equal contrast dose. The MERIT study5, is the most recent of them, and it highlights the value of high relaxivity vs contrast concentration; in that study three blinded and fully independent neuroradiologists reported their assessment of lesion delineation, extent of disease, internal morphology, contrast enhancement and diagnostic preference, and their measurement of contrast-to-noise ratio and lesion enhancement.

 MR Enterprise Section: Hitachi
Hitachi Medical Systems Europe presently introduces ECHELON OVAL; a 1.5T MRI scanner with a unique wide 74cm oval-shaped bore, allowing for decent patient experiences with outstanding comfort. At RSNA 2012, Hitachi Medical announced an extension of its game-changing oval concept to 3T with a work-in-progress scanner. The concept behind the idea of an oval bore is simple. While closed-bore magnets typically have cylindrical shapes, they hardly match the typical patient body. As a result, cylindrical bores may provoke claustrophobia, a serious patient restriction and major cause behind the large number of incomplete MR scans every year, significantly impacting on health-care costs.
