 Welcome by our President
Dear Members, Colleagues, and Friends of the ESMRMB,

We are getting ready for our 29th Annual Scientific Meeting 2012 in Lisbon. A record breaking number of abstract submissions is an indicator for the attractiveness of the city and the healthy and steady growth of our society. The chair of the Scientific Programme Committee, Prof. Stefan Sunaert, and his team together with our Educational Officer, Prof. Siegfried Trattnig, are undertaking great efforts to prepare an exciting scientific and educational programme for the meeting. The chair of the Local Organising Committee, Prof. Mario Forjaz Secca, is preparing highlight attractions to present Lisbon at its best.
I am happy to report that ESMRMB has been accepted as institutional member of the European Society of Radiology (ESR) with whom we have a long standing productive cooperation that we will intensify with respect to MRI topics. In addition, we have strengthened communication with the European Federation of Radiographer Societies (EFRS), reaching out to a community that is becoming increasingly active also in MRI research. This will allow us to reach out to the largest community of MR researchers and users.
We are currently increasing our social media activity with the aim of providing more information on the society, our scientific and educational offerings, and other interesting topics related to MRI and the ESMRMB. Find us on Facebook and Twitter, get involved, and help us to build our new online community.

With my kindest regards,
Oliver Speck
ESMRMB President
ESMRMB Congress 2012 - Scientific Highlights
We are proud to announce that a record high number of 893 proffered papers (+13% compared to 2011) were submitted for the 29th Annual Scientific Meeting in Lisbon. On behalf of the Scientific Programme Committee we would like to thank you all for your numerous submissions! The notifications of acceptance or rejection will be sent out to all submitters in early July 2012.

The meeting in Lisbon offers three days of educational and scientific programme particularly attractive to clinicians, basic scientists, MR engineers and MR radiographers alike.
In addition to the Sir Peter Mansfield Lecture, given by Prof. Jürgen Hennig, the programme consists of 3 plenary sessions, 20 mini-categorical courses and 8 teaching sessions. Further highlights will be the Round Table Discussion (Does MR-PET really make sense from a clinical and technical point-of-view?) and the Hot Topic Debate (Will hyperpolarisation ever be ready for routine clinical use?). A Joint EFOMP/ESMRMB Session will focus on “Advanced MRI and MRS imaging for radiation planning”.
The scientific programme will count numerous parallel scientific sessions for oral presentations. Time slots will be allocated for meeting the authors of traditional and electronic (EPOS) posters, as well as of Software Exhibits.

ESMRMB Congress 2012 - Radiographers' Session
In order to meet the needs of MR technologists/radiographers a 3-day radiographers’ session will be introduced in Lisbon. Under the basic topic of “Everything you always wanted to know but never dared to ask” we kindly invite you to join these sessions in order to learn more about fMRI, Diffusion (Tensor) MRI, Perfusion MRI, Whole Body Diffusion, Cardiac MRI and Susceptibility Weighted Imaging.
On Saturday, October 6, invited speakers from our MR Enterprise members like GE, Hitachi, Philips, Siemens and Toshiba will give a lecture on “MR physics made easy”.

 School of MRI 2012
education for physicians and MR technologists/radiographers
The ESMRMB is proud that in 2012 two new courses are introduced to the School of MRI educational course programme:

Body Diffusion-weighted MRI
The course already took place in London in April this year and was a great success, thanks to the efforts of Dr. Dow-Muh Koh, the organiser of this course. Click here to find out more about him and the success of the first Body DW-MRI course this year.

MR Safety
Prof. Siegfried Trattnig, member of the ESMRMB Safety Committee, would be pleased to welcome you at the upcoming first School of MRI course on MR Safety from October 18-20, 2012 in Vienna, Austria. To find out more on Prof. Trattnig's background and to get information on the course, please click here.

A total of 7 courses are still coming up this year, so make sure to reserve your place soon, as some of the upcoming courses are already almost fully booked! To register, please visit our online registration tool MySchool of MRI.

 Hands-On MRI 2012
education for MR technologists/radiographers and interested physicians
In 2012, a course on fMRI & DTI for clinical practice will be organised within ESMRMB's Hands-On MRI course programme, dedicated to MR technologists/radiographers and interested physicians. The Saint-Anne Hospital in Paris will be hosting the course from December 13-15, 2012. Due to it's hands-on character the course is limited to 30 participants, so make sure to register soon.

ESMRMB is now an institutional member of ESR
We are pleased to inform you that since the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) in March this year, the ESMRMB is an institutional member of the ESR, the European Society of Radiology. The ESMRMB is therefore now a “European Allied Sciences Society”, a newly introduced ESR institutional membership category.

Besides being represented as a society in various ESR committees, ESMRMB members, both radiologists and non-radiologists, have the possibility to become members of the ESR. From 2013 onwards, all non-radiologists can apply for “full allied sciences membership” with voting rights at the ESR General Assembly. Until now, ESR full membership has been restricted to European radiologists.

For more information, please contact the ESMRMB Office.

Alliance for MRI – will there be a derogation for MRI?
Since 2007, the Alliance for MRI – a coalition of patient groups, scientists, the medical community and Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) launched by the European Society of Radiology (ESR) – has dedicated itself to raising awareness among European politicians about the importance of exempting magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) from the limit values set in Directive 2004/40/EC.
Directive 2004/40/EC aims at protecting workers from electromagnetic fields (EMF Directive). The aim of protecting workers is certainly supported by the Alliance. However, if the limit values laid down in the Directive were applied to MRI, it would prohibit interventional procedures and forbid nurses from remaining with patients during a scanning procedure thus denying Europe’s patients access to this much needed technology.
