"Heya Girls!"
This business of time rushing away at high-speed is something I honestly can’t get my head around. My internal clock is set to the beginning of May, but on my calendar I read that it’s the end of July. What does this mean? Aside from the fact that I need a neurological watchmaker, the CitySpotterGirl is, above all, taking her traditional summer break! In this edition, before handing myself over to well-groomed boredom, I’m sending you the best restaurant and shop tips of recent months, instead of appointments. I’m also serving up the best event of this week: the Popfest on the Karlsplatz! For the third year running, the Woodstock of our homegrown pop-scene is taking place, including 50 Austrian bands – spread out of 4 days, at various locations around the Karlskirche, and admission is free! From Fatima Spar to the much-loved Ernst Molden and the Afro-Viennese Anbuley to the debut of the new musician collective Welle Wien, with State-of-the-Art- Pop fresh out of the oven. This is what I call the perfect start to a holiday!

Wishing You a Lovely August,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Popfest, Seebühne + Locations around Karlsplatz, 1040 Vienna. July 26th-29th. Free admission. Web

P.S. Things continue on 30.8. with the Special Experts Newsletter, and the regular edition as of 6.9.!

Feinkoch
Isn’t this practical! The young Simon Jacko is selling inspiration in his brand new shop. As it were. The grocery store of the new generation (with its cool country house-style interior) exclusively sells products for “cooking without thinking”. New dishes are on offer daily: simply grab a well presented recipe card, for example for topinambur-soup with chilli and white chocolate, gather the accurately pre-measured ingredients together and rush off home to a “fully-prepared” cooking experience. Recipes: easy. Ingredients: lots of organic. And open until 21:00. Fantastic!

Bakery in Hotel Daniel
It’s astounding how wishing has worked so well recently. A year ago the CitySpotterGirl wrote how much she’d really love to see a “Speisesaal” in Vienna like they have in Graz – and on come the Grazers to the Danube, open up the first branch of the dapper, Grazer design hotel Daniel and turn the lobby into a bakery for one and all. Tourists and Viennese alike can chill, work (free WiFi), and of course eat in the groovily furnished loft. Rib eye steaks or sandwiches or breakfast or fresh muffins. Or fish cooked in paper, which tastes particularly good. Thanks, this is how I imagined it!

Mochi
Today, at this point, you are experiencing a luxuriating CitySpotterGirl. Everything is great about Mochi (pronounced: ‘Motschi’). The interior: black walls, wooden tables, a stylish bar the only decoration, running through the entire restaurant. The service: Even in the worst turmoil so sweet and uncomplicated it’s hard to believe. And most importantly, a Japanese-inspired cuisine, fun and tasty, which simply thrills. Fantastic: Robata-Gill skewers, soft shelled crabs, sea bream sashimi with truffle vinaigrette. What the young owners (from Vienna, Tyrol and Israel) have put together here is - pardon the banal word - awesome!

Urban Tool
Well, that's what I call timing! The CitySpotterGirl only has moved to the vicinity of the Margaretenstraße and Urban Tool opens its first flagship store. It’s dressed light and space-age-like - and therefore perfectly suited for the hip bags, in which to stylishly stash all the nifty technical companions such as iPhone, iPod, camera and notebook. In the cool and casual shop, grey fashion dolls (which hang from the ceiling) present the myriad ways to wear the holster designs. Functionality is high on the list at Urban Tool: the materials used (such as neoprene) are soft and suited perfectly to each item’s contents. Trendy pieces for modern urban women!

Manameierei
It’s hard to believe what a barren dairy at a car park can be turned into! Recently, a trip to the Schwarzenbergpark has doubled in value: apart from dreamy nature, the pretty Manameierei right at the entrance to the park, locks you in really well. Inside everything is white-washed, a pair of shoes hang inquisitively at the loo door, and grass grows on the roof. And what can go wrong when the breakfast carries a name as poetic as "Morning dew on the Hameau". The menu is small, next to breakfast there is, above all, Mana, extremely thin flat bread, creatively dressed. MANAmääh comes with goats cheese and honey, served with a fig dip. Hmmm…

Zweitbester
Right, now the CitySpotterGirl has been plain lucky. Just in time, just before the move to the new 4th District office, a riveting restaurant has opened nearby. Non-fuss deco, with concrete floors and beautiful wooden tables set - and damn good food. Its creative (fried trout with beetroot and apple risotto), almost everything is organic, and the prices are amazingly low. The owners’ grandmothers cook regularly, and so do stand-in cooks, like the Plachutta chef on staff at the moment. And at the toilet (you need to have seen this!) concerts take place. Please sign me up as a regular customer.

lila
An authentic record player stands in the corner, Billie Holiday sings in a smoky voice, the smell of fresh flowers wafts from the vintage shelves - and the brand new lila collection hangs from the clothes racks. Designer Lisi Lang has relocated from the Yppenmarkt and opened a delightful shop in the Kirchengasse last Saturday. The perfect fit for her fashion with its unusually sophisticated styles, skillfully commuting between avant-garde and everyday practicality. Great: the almost transparent overalls. The shop on the Yppenmarkt will remain a fixture, by the way: older collections will be on sale there!

Klee am Hanslteich
Opened last week and already overrun on the first day – that’s what you call a successful start. Vienna is one romantic attraction richer, one that is not only idyllic but almost brings about that holiday feeling. Ultimately, you’re right at the water’s edge or, more precisely, above the water. The run-down inn at the Hanslteich has given way to a modern timber lounge, consisting almost exclusively of a lake terrace. The menu is comprised of selected delicacies, from mangalitsa boar to truffle pasta. And while one casually enjoys the Schnitzel, frogs croak and dragonflies dart across the water.

Le Moulin Rose
The wait is over! "Le Moulin Rose" opens its doors in a new location this Saturday afternoon, after two years on maternity leave. As of then, women can finally once again buy the colourful and enchanting creations produced by Delphine Leger from Parisian and Viennese flea market finds. Foot stools that have been jazzed up with vintage wallpaper, fabrics, buttons, fancy jewellery, retro-dishes and painted cans that can make you feel really nostalgic. Each piece is lovely and unique, and sometimes also eccentric.

District7
The location is a real eye-catcher! The Polish street artist, Swanski, was flown in and given free reign: and now a wild landscape of animals in black and white covers the walls of the new store. Fish, birds and horned beasts cavort above the clothes stands, adorned with the finest in street wear. Casual pieces by Obey, mio animo, ATO Berlin and other small Berlin labels, that you can’t get anywhere else in town. Apart from that, there are books and witty accessories. For example, at the moment: masks of all sorts of celebrities. Britney Spears meets Johnny Depp.

Rote Rübe
Yes, that's how the CitySpotterGirl likes it: small, fine, familiar. This delightful new restaurant, aptly calls itself, “The Break Station”. It serves only breakfast, and crepes at lunch - all with a Greek twist. The boss comes from Athens, and although not directly from the restaurant business, can cook up a yummy feast. The crepes with marinated artichokes or yogurt, honey and nuts taste delicious and are served on old white kitchen tables. In the corner an impressive, old furnace roars. Pepita-chairs and a cool asphalt floor make the mix perfect.

Vielfalt
Don’t start wondering if in the near future shops for furniture and home accessories are introduced here more often. Because after three years of tons of young designers opening up their hip boutique studios in Vienna, it's suddenly gone off big time on the home design front. As in the only-just-opened Vielfalt: Tamara Renk, Hetzendorf Fashion School graduate, has dressed her shop in self-expression. 60's stools are knitted-round, witty and colourful bags are created from vintage fabrics and spoons are turned into coat hooks. Up-cycling at its finest - and super convenient as gifts! Please, pimp my nightstand!

Kontiki
Karin Maislinger designs bags for her label Kontiki that you can always recognise stright away. They’re namely all made from old bicycle inner tubes! Black, in straight-lined, elegant, timeless designs and incredibly durable. Recently, the first Kontiki store opened near the Yppenmarkt. Here you can buy the whole collection and at the same watch as the bags are manufactured low-tech and by hand in the studio at the back of the shop. And since Karin Maislinger also makes fashion from time to time, fashionable tops hang next to the City Bags, along with scarves and lovely, warm jackets made of neoprene.

Tian
The chandeliers in the newly opened Tian are quite a must-see! And while you're there, go ahead and eat the same time, because what is served here on elegant plates is, by Viennese-standards (still) rather unusual. The Non smoking-restaurant focuses on an ethical and sustainable lifestyle and wants (without missionary zeal!) to present the diversity of meatless cuisine. The former "Taubenkogel" sous chef Paul Ivic cooks seasonal vegetarian fare from breakfast (very creative) to dinner. The prices are somewhat elevated, but it befits the damn chic ambience of Tian.

fünf!
Every now and then the CitySpotterGirl will get you to check out stores that are out of town - if they are something special. As, for example, concept store fünf!, Which recently opened in Baden. Yes, the pretty little town is, technically seen, not a shopping hit, but Andrea Vogl’s store is definitely worth the trip. Fresh, young, sustainable design is presented here, and lovingly worn together all over Europe: Coats of Wubet, great paper jewellery by Ana Hagopian from Barcelona, eco-Shirts by Shirtsberry, art by Koni Oberhauser. In short, favourites for all occasions!

Pippas und Paulis
What happens when two girlfriends get together with different interests? An absolutely witty shop for 6 paws. One half is a cakes bar and fancy foods shop, the other half a hip dog boutique. The combination sounds wild, but the concept works. For dogs, there are little stylish beds, and collars (made from Tostmann fabrics!) to buy, and, for us two-legged creatures, Pippa’s raspberry poppy seed cake, cookies or grand cheesecake with orange topping. Baked fresh daily, served with a delicious coffee or tea. And all this in the midst of British country house-style. Very lovely!

Joseph - Brot vom Pheinsten
At last! Joseph Bread, previously only on offer in selected restaurants, has opened its first store. Very warm, bright colours, rustic wooden shelves and panelling, units made of stone and lots of glass comes with this very different bakery. With mere hand craftsmanship, the loaves of the young, dedicated baker are made in the Waldviertel and baked twice – that makes the sourdough bread so crispy and heavenly fluffy at the same! In addition to bread and pastries, fresh salads, cereal, organic milk and all kinds of spreads are available in this fragrant kingdom. Swarm!

Beaulieu
Pleasant trip to Paris? The new Beaulieu bistro is indeed run by (very friendly) Austrians, and although its situated in the Palais Ferstel passage, it could just as easily be found somewhere in the chic part of the Marais. From the beautiful tiled floor to the cheese counter, it’s the virtually-ideal notion of a delicatessen bistro. There are hams, fromages, wines and teas to buy, but you can also eat here. Delicious baguettes (with duck breast and beetroot!), Croque Monsieur and a cheap lunch menu, direction home cooking. Tip: It’s a little more peaceful sitting in the gallery.

Play loud
The name says it all! The underwear is colourful and loud in this amusing shop in the Siebensterngasse. On a holiday in Bali, Michaela Weber fell in love with the bright, offbeat and sometimes scanty items of the Australian surf brand 69slam, and brings a little pep to the European rip-tide life with her store. Aloha-prints, cow spots, numbers, stars and hippie patterns adorn the panties, made from cotton or microfiber, high quality-crafted and very affordable. There’s chic beachwear too - even in winter!

Milchbart
The Meidlinger Market is not (yet) as hip at the Saturday Yppen Market or the Karmeliter Market. A hipster-free zone so to speak. But for the past two weeks a truly fine mini venue has been open there nonetheless. The young Mr. Christian, previously a photographer and chef, has renovated a stall, brought in a couple of pieces of 60s furniture and christened it “Milchbart”. And there he cooks whatever freshness the market brings him. Sometimes sausage ravioli with porcini and at other times homemade Gnocchi pomodoro. It's creative and totally uncomplicated here. Just how the CitySpotterGirl likes it best!
