 » Happy New Year!
 Welcome by our President
Dear Members, Colleagues, and Friends of the ESMRMB,

As president of our society I am very happy to report that the society is in a healthy state and steadily growing with over 1200 active members. Our 28th Annual Scientific Meeting 2011 in Leipzig has been a successful and memorable event with great science, discussions and interaction thanks to our scientific programme committee chair, Prof. Ch. Segebarth, our local organising committee chair, Prof. Th. Kahn and the industry support, in particular the MR Enterprise members. We are already progressing towards the final preparation of our next Meeting 2012 in and look forward to meeting all of you in this attractive and vibrant city of Lisbon. Prof. Sunaert as head of our scientific programme committee together with Prof. Forjaz Secca, the head of the local organising committee, are extremely active to ensure another high quality meeting. Prof. Trattnig, together with the education and workshop committee, also compiled a very attractive educational programme ranging from MR basics to practical clinical applications.

I am proud and happy to report that the society’s journal MAGMA has continuously improved over the last years now reaching an impact factor of 2.37. The society particularly thanks Prof. Cozzone, the Journal’s Editor-in-Chief. We invite you to consider MAGMA for the publication of your next study results.

Many of you may be aware of the ongoing debate regarding safety regulations for workers’ exposition to electromagnetic fields. The current development is very disturbing and poses a serious threat to our field. Please read more in the article 'Update from the Alliance for MRI" or visit the Alliance for MRI webpage and support their case!

With my kindest regards,
Oliver Speck
ESMRMB President

Update from the Alliance for MRI
Discussions in European Council put future of MRI at stake
In an effort to protect workers from exposure to electromagnetic fields, the European institutions adopted EU Physical Agents Directive 2004/40/EC (EMF) with an original national implementation date in 2008. If the limit values laid down in the Directive were applied to MRI, it would prohibit interventional procedures, forbid nurses from remaining with patients during a scanning procedure, and thus deny Europe’s patients access to this much needed technology.
The European Commission has heard the concerns of the Alliance for MRI representing Europe’s patients and the scientific community, decided a 4-year postponement of the implementation deadline and unveiled in June a proposal to revise the Directive in order to ensure unimpeded future access to MRI for Europe’s patients.
The proposal is currently under discussion in Council (representing member state governments) and the European Parliament.
If adopted, the proposal would exempt MRI from the exposure limits in the Directive, as MRI workers are already protected by specific safety standards for MRI scanners as well workers’ protection guidelines, which cover all MRI workers from doctors to cleaning and maintenance staff. The exemption would not impair the health and safety of MRI workers, but would allow continued patient access to this life-saving technology.
It is vital that decision-makers understand the importance of supporting the proposal put forward by the Commission which is based on sound scientific evidence and must not be compromised in the interest of Europe’s patients.
The Alliance for MRI – launched by ESR as a coalition of patient groups, scientists, the medical community and Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) – raised concerns about the problem as long ago as 2007 and has proved instrumental in developing the proposed changes. The Alliance is now looking for support from the upcoming Danish Presidency.
Unfortunately a number of member states are opposing the Commission proposal for various reasons, mainly because they do not wish to have an exemption for one particular sector. It needs to be ensured that they understand that the derogation for MRI is on the basis of sound evidence and must not be compromised in the interest of Europe’s patients.
The coming year will be crucial in the process, as the European Parliament will have its plenary vote on the Commission proposal in mid February and as the Council will further debate the issue in order to arrive at an opinion and it is much hoped that a solution is found that allows patients across Europe to continue to benefit from this vital technology.
ESMRMB members are encouraged to support the Alliance by arranging high-level meetings at the national ministries of social affairs and health to raise the issue as well as to contact MEPs in the relevant committees. Background documents, template letters and guidance is available from the Alliance Secretariat.
