"Heya Girls!"
Well isn’t that a lovely idea? In the nicest spots in the Weinviertel, mid-landscape, a massive banquet table is being set up and stylishly decorated – and the best Weinviertel chefs are getting cooking! Proffering fine and traditional dishes made from ingredients native to Weinviertel soil and served with the appropriate wine. No idea how they are going to go about this logistically, but the vision of dining in a grain field to the sound of birds chirping and watching the setting sun, I find enticing. This weekend, “Tafeln im Weinviertel” (Banqueting in the Wine District), is stationing itself in Niedersulz, and will be particularly chic. The charming village square of the historic museum village is namely being transformed into a 1920s-style summer resort for two nights. Karl Polak, a chef from Mistelbach, is reinterpreting Weinviertler specialties with a 1920s twist. And those who want to can show up in a flapper dress and a bobbed haircut. Oh, Summer is wonderful!

Tafeln im Weinviertel, various locations. Until August 24th, always 18:00. Web

Lieblichkeiten is closing down
Bad news: The thrilling shop in the Neubaugasse is closing its gates! Lisa Juen is moving all the witty things that no one really needs but everyone really wants to the web: with floral make-up bags and pencil cases by kitsch kitchen, pink picture frames, cherry ear-decorations or cute salad servers by Rice. And now the good news: Up until the final closing on Saturday, there are three days worth of hefty special discounts. Already reduced items (up to -60%!) and regular prices are tumbling down by another -10%. A perfect opportunity to treat friends, and oneself, to a little something!

Faust as Viennese Posse
Today at Am Hof the Wiener Lustspielhaus is beginning its summer season and eliciting Goethe’s Faust’s profound snide humour. Under the direction of Viennese-original Adi Hirschal the posse is celebrating “Faust or a dermatologist on the look out for a good skin” premiere. Especially for the Lustspielhaus, the writer Franzobel will pull from the heavens of high art, with unerring pointedness and sense for language, Goethe’s parade-parable about the human condition, in a Viennese dialect. Meaning: for genuine laughs the audience will find themselves back in the dubious world of dermatologist Johann Faust von Zupfnudel. Funny!

Espressofilm
“Short films are the espressos among films. The same dose but with less water.” Now for film lovers, every Thursday and Friday the whole summer long, there are short films from around the world to be seen – free of charge! Especially charming is the location: the short film summer will take place in the garden of the Palais Schönborn (Volkskunde Museum). This year many films in the wide-ranging program hail from Eastern Europe. And because Kneading-and-Paper Animation has its own category, the museum’s pottery workshop (under an open sky) is open to visitors before each film starts.

A nifty campaign for hobby photographers: until the end of August, under the slogan “Summer in the Garden Palais Liechtenstein”, the funniest, most beautiful, and most creative summer moments are being sought amidst the palace grounds. Regardless whether in colour or in black and white, every participant can submit up to 3 photos or post them directly on the palais’ facebook site. On FB the number of ‘Likes’ per photograph will determine the best top 10. These will then be displayed in the Garden Palais in October as part of the Long Night of the Museums. A photography course prize is waiting to be snapped up!

Melange fatale
For a long time Vienna coffee houses were considered to be places of ill repute, where a decent woman would rather not been seen alone. Only at the start of the 20th Century did women win themselves a seat on the literary café scene. In the Café Central, and especially in the Café Herrenhof , female authors such as Lina Loos, Gina Kaus, Milena Jesenska or Veza Canetti proved more than a match for their male colleagues. In the Café Landtmann one can now listen to stories by and about coffee house women - in enacted readings.

Cloister Concert
A concert that isn’t only unusual because of its music but also because of its location. In the summer the Vienna Dominicans sometimes open their gates – and, in doing so, open up a remarkable space of quietness in the city centre: In the pretty cloister, which since 1235 has survived the city’s history with its unique atmosphere, a series of concerts are taking place. Music by Johannes Brahms can be heard tonight. Natalie Kleinhammer and Mary Hörner will make the historic cloister walls resound on piano and violin. Admission to the concert is free.

For years the green party’s bicycle rescue-squad has been touring through the city. Today she will be stationed at the Hirschstetten swimming pond. Each bike is inspected by experts, after which a servicing of minor repairs can be carried out on-site - so setting the gears and brakes, controlling the worn parts and, if necessary, changing an inner tube. Bigger defects will be taken into account and information about the closest repair shops passed on. And nifty: the whole thing is free of charge! Well Hatted
Actually surprising: The history of the hat dates back to Antiquity. It was, however, always an all-male affair. Women wore headscarves or hoods. It wasn’t until the end of the 19th Century that the female world discovered the accessory for herself and it followed that: the more opulent the hat, the higher a woman’s status in society. In the Artstetten Palace everything is being spun around hats at the moment: In an exhibition, historic caps can be seen next to exotic headdresses from around the world, as well as a small millinery workshop. In conjunction with a visit to the palace park, a lovely Sunday excursion!

Theatre for the Tastebuds
And here’s one more tip for the countryside. As a gourmet, one has to have experienced this! Erich Stekovics, who actually studied theology and today is one of the most innovative farmers in Burgenland, gives tours every summer through his “Theatre for the Tastebuds”. The main actors in this piece taste like banana, melon or sugarbeet and grow in abundance on his fields at the edge of Lake Neusiedl in Frauenkirchen. Erich Stekovics, the undisputed emperor of tomatoes, cultivates strains of tomato thousands of years old, which he presents and explains on a tour of his fields. Tastings included!

Major and Minor
Even though some believe it’s only "urban legend" - the Spittelberg songs from the notorious red light district of the 18th Century really exist. The language of the “Gstanzln” (Viennese for stanza) is drastic. On close listening, revealed between the lines, is a piece of social history that goes deeper under the skin than the obscene texts can scratch your decency. With the Spittelberg songs, actor and musician Stephan Paryla loudly paints a harsh, deep black genre picture of Vienna, in which the tone is set in minor. But beware: the evening is not appropriate for young ones!

Piber meets Vienna
So, now honestly: Who of you has been to see the Lippizaner horses in the Spanish Riding School? Me neither. As it’s really only for tourists and costs a pretty penny too. Well at least the second comment is no longer valid these days. Namely, while the jumping equestrians are on holiday, the offspring of the Piber school are stopping by in Vienna. The summer program, with an admission fee from 10€ up, shows young stallions, which have so far only frolicked in the pastures of Styria, mother-mares and their small foals, and various original historic carriages. Perspective
The kitchen as a laboratory! After the 1st World War, the Schott company in Jena developed a completely new heat resistant glass for household use. Since the housewives of the day were somewhat sceptical about this, Bauhaus artists were given the design commission. The result was the development of the famous Jena glassware: baking dishes, bowls, and, of course, the teapot, designed by W. Wagenfeld. The Generation of the CitySpotterGirl grew up with Jena glass, the younger ones can go & see it in the museum.

Cafe Mascherl
This could only happen in Vienna: Cafe Mascherl in the Piaristengasse is a new coffee house that looks like an old one. Instead of going for a modern update, the owner, Sabine Rehhorn, has furnished her little Cafe with Thonet chairs, marble tables and velvet covered benches. The atmosphere of a real Vienna coffee house is missing, only due to the youth of the clientele, but despite this, it’s nice. The coffee and tea are excellent and on Saturdays one can even have a properly lavish brunch. As well as even read the papers in peace here!
