"Heya Girls!"
There are nights that we never ever forget. Such as that night from my Berlin years, when they performed "The White Horse Inn" in a spiegeltent. With an unknown Meret Becker, her famous stepdad Otto Sanders, with Max Raabe and the Pfister siblings. At this still legendary cult staging, people were actually rolling on the floor laughing. The performance ended, yet the artists didn't leave the stage. They simply continued until the small hours of day - an improvised concert, such as one can only experience in Berlin. Today, Meret Becker is a star, has recorded five albums, won all German film prizes and starting 2015, will become the new Berliner commissioner of the crime series Tatort. But before that, she is coming to Vienna - and on Tuesday, she will sing about love. Most of all about love that failed. It means more to her, she says and grins ;-)
Wishing you a nice week

Eyes wide open
Stanley Kubrick – with films from „2001“ to „Eyes wide shut“, one of the most important film directors in the history of cinema – can now be discovered anew: as a photographer. Over 60 years ago, Kubrick created around 300 reportages for the legendary magazine "Look". And he "staged" the series of photos in the same way he later did his famous films: whether he accompanied a boxer through his everyday matches, or showed aristocratic beauties in their glamorous world - Kubrick didn't take pictures, he told stories.

Spring festival in the Kettenbrückengasse
A few nice people from the Kettenbrückengasse have come together and are inviting everyone to a party. "Flying Models" are showing on the street current spring collections from lu-design with rich yet soft colours, from mein design and from Dörte Kaufmann. Vineyard Pollak serves its brand-new rockabilly wine and Abidin Ertugrul spoils the hungry with Turkish delicacies. Naturally, one can also shop there - and with every purchase over 10€, one gets an organic tiger plant. Now let's hope the weather keeps up!

Sing-along: Rocky Horror Picture Show
Dresscode: “Horror”, when they say: “It’s just a jump to the left, and then a step to the right” – and off goes the sing-along Rocky Horror Picture Show tonight at Stadtsaal. Four "hosts" are moderating the hottest musical film of all times with gags and stand-up comedy in front of the screen, they heat up the public and encourage it to participate. Most important utensil: the fun-bag everyone gets with their ticket. Content: secret. Last year, at "Weißen Rössl", there was for example a watergun inside ;-) And today: put on your most horrific apparel, go there and sing along: “I’m just a sweet transvestite ...”

Zsuzsanna Budapest
Older calibres such as the CitySpotterGirl all have at least one book on their shelf: “The Grandmother of Time” or maybe “The holy book of women's mysteries”. Zsuzsanna Budapest is an incredible (and most of all funny!) author and icon of the feminist witch movement. Because of her age, the Budapest-born Californian doesn't travel abroad any more - so it can be seen as a medium-sized sensation that she is holding a moon-magic workshop for women in Vienna this week. She's already giving a lecture tonight: about cyclical women's power.

Miss Bubble Shot’s pop-up store
Mexican-born Ursula Rivera has settled down in Vienna and created a fine label: Miss Bubble Shot shows unusual and unusually pretty hand-made soaps. A true eye-candy as well as a good alternative to mass products: all products are completely vegan, free from animal testing and organic. This afternoon, everything can be sniffed, touched and bought at the one-day pop-up store. And there's not only soap: body lotions, lip balm and jewellery made out of glass and textiles are also available.

A great idea to put some life back into worn-out clothes: textile-artist Elisabeth Rössler pitches her tent on the Kutschkermarkt today, unpacks the sewing machines and invites all to sew for free. Old dresses, shirts and trousers turn into practical recycling bags - with the artist's assistance. Beginners are welcome too. The results are stylish jeans-pouches or refined bags made of plaid shirts. Those who don't want to sew themselves can buy the artist's finished Nähzelt-bags on site.

Vienna's "kuhlest" flea market
It has become a real institution: the "kuhl" flea market on the Neubaugasse. For two days, businesses on the shopping street will present their stands on the closed-off street. It's the perfect occasion for wandering and shopping, there will be culinary treats in the open air. This year, there will even be a vip-flea market: many artists have already said they would provide precious donations in kind to be sold. And some such as Manuel Rubey, Gerald Fleischhacker and 5/8erl in Ehr'n will even show up in person. The proceeds will go to the "Freunde Schützen Haus".

Shen Yun 2014
Designer Donna Karan describes it as a "fascinating performance", Oscar winner Cate Blanchett as "wonderful". What the ladies are so enthusiastic about is Shen Yun's new show. The world's best ensemble for classical Chinese dance tells the story of 5000 years of culture with a live orchestra, booming war drums, grace, aerobatics and colourful garments. The sensational show now is now making a halt in Vienna for two days. By the way: Shen Yun is based in New York today, because traditional Chinese culture is frowned upon in China.

Handicraft Market Cobenzl
Usually, this is a kid's farm high above the city with a petting zoo and pony rides. But this week-end, the "Landgut Cobenzl" will become the scene of a handicraft market. There will be wood threshing by Hans Moser. Original small pieces of furniture by Sonja Steidl to store jewellery. And art made out of stones by Heidi Höllerer and Robert Schneider, who look for very particular stones in open terrains. In addition, Christian Tinhof sells ceramic for house and garden - and a small plant market with rarities will attract friends of the green stuff.

Vienna Genuss Festival
Yes, the turmoil on the meadows of the Stadtpark is growing again: for the 7th time, the Vienna Genuss Festival ("Festival of delight") takes place this weekend! At over 170 elegant stands, the best culinary manufactures of Austria offer regional products to taste or to take home: salmon from the Alps, organic hay-lemonade, saffron salt, plum vinegar, muscatel chocolate or cherry noodles - all "made in Austria". Nice: this year, there's also a marmalade-conservation show on the programme and at Grillclub, the world master shows how it’s done.

MAZE: Open atelier day
That's going to be a lot! Exhibitions, performances, workshops: today is open atelier day at the WUK. Over 50 artists open their ateliers, and visitors can take a look behind the scenes in 11 shops. And make exciting things: craft koi fishes out of paper at a free workshop, rummage through a book flea market, experience live the creation of works of art. And all should take a look on the roof! There, Andreas Strauss cooks his "haute cuisine" on top - directly into a rearranged trash bin, the "Soupertonne" ("soupbin"). And afterwards: films and party!

Classic flashmob
Flashmob and clubbing with classical music? It works! Young musicians from 40 nations are bringing classical music to Vienna tomorrow with the “Classical:NEXT” Festival. Today, it starts with a bang: with a flashmob in the Shopping Mall Wien. A-capella music on escalators, in the gallery, in the foyer. On Saturday, the second flashmob kicks off at the Prater: at 11:00, symphonic brass music in front of the big wheel. And in the afternoon, we head to the Badeschiff: young musicians perform new-classical on the sun deck and at the bar. Cool! And all at free entrance.

Madeleine Peyroux
In her voice, the patina of the 40s shimmers through, the jazz of Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith. And still, this American lady with a French name is really anchored in the here and now. With her unique voice, the jazz singer managed to move up from street musician in Paris to world star - and she sings with a tender implacability on her current album "The Blue Room", which she based on songs by Ray Charles. It can be heard and seen today at Porgy, providing the framework for a high-class jazz concert.

Or the film "Since I was born", that tells of the confined cohabitation in Dheisheh refugee camps.

I am a drop in the ocean
Everyone remembers it: as Ukraine's government seeked to "approach" Russia in November 2013, thousands of citizens occupied Maidan square in Kiev. The protests escalated in February 2014 - also against state despotism and corruption. And every time, artists stood in the front rows of protest movements: with posters, performances and art installations directly on the contested Maidan square. They gave revolution a face: a face of freedom and democracy. The Künstlerhaus now shows these works by 36 Ukranian artists - a must-see!

the Lowdown on denim
Now this is almost a question of principle. At the new shop on the Burggasse, there is - for the first time in Vienna! - jeans in raw denim quality. So the way jeans were before mass production was introduced: thicker, denser textile, coloured with indigo. The authentic, initially stiff tubes are worn in a completely different way than our usual stretch-thingies - but in return, we get trousers for life. Generally speaking, the cool-looking store with its steel beams and selected vintage furniture is an Eldorado for nice hand-made things: leather belts, shirts and dresses in fifties-style.
