"Heya Girls!"
Do my mobile and my Bluetooth mouse know that they owe their lives to a wonderful woman? And a Viennese lady at that? One who was married six times, had many affairs, also with women, and became famous in 1933 over night because of a naked scene in a film? Hedy Lamarr led a really unusual life between Vienna and Los Angeles - and as a Hollywood goddess, also invented the frequency hopping technique. Today's mobile communications technology wouldn't be conceivable without it. The biography of Austrian atom physicist Lise Meitner is less glamorous, but just as exciting. And if we also include the double Nobel Prize winner and discoverer of radioactivity Marie Curie, we get Anita Zieher's newest play. She finally (thank you!) brings women and technology on stage and plays all three ladies, whose biographies present such unexpected parallels. Hedy Lamarr's conclusion: "Every woman is an inventor!"

Wishing you a nice week

Momix Botanica
Wow! Does this look awesome: Momix Botanica's model is none other than nature itself. Seas of flowers and splendid feathers are brought to the stage in this play by award-winning dancer and illusionist Moses Pendleton. 10 dancers from his modern dance company Momix represent the wonders of nature in an acrobatic manner: flowing movements, gaudy costumes, seemingly surrealistic figures. From birds chirping to Vivaldi, Pendleton's choreographies combine with music and sounds. Dancing kisses fantasy: in Austria for the first time!

Cartoons about Vienna
There's one thing the Viennese are really good at: grumbling about Vienna ;-) And it's really going on at today's vernissage, which follows the motto "Heaven is full of violins, the streets full of asses - that's how we know Vienna". In this fun cartoon exhibition, visitors learn about the city's unknown side: it reveals imperial farts, the Hundertwasser-brothel that is much beloved by tourists or the Sacher-Masoch cake. Indeed, everything about the glamour and squalor of a metropolis that turns on a waltz rhythm until it barfs. Many of the artists are present at the vernissage.

Bad things
Wanted: bad taste! For this exhibition at least, where a historical search for lapses of taste is being conducted. What is taste really? And who decides what is good or bad, pretty or ugly? Gustav Pazaurek for example, who put together in 1912 a complex catalogue of criteria to detect bad taste. From objects from his collection to contemporary kitsch, this show creates an encyclopaedia of bad taste with over 500 exhibits. Tastefuly dreadful, funny, in-your-face – and at times, even pretty.

Highlight your Home!
For the tinkerer fraction and for design aficionados too: during this three-day workshop, everyone will draft and craft their own individual dream lamps. From paper that was put into form using plug-in, bending and folding techniques. It's always good to bring a bit of skill, but course instructor Monika Rycerz will be happy to help out newcomers. She’ll also explain how lamps can become the atmospheric highlight of a room during a short theoretical introduction. Experiment, snip and glue: more DIY workshops this week on the web portal.

Kiwi Island #3
The young creative scene grows and also thrives further in 2014. The Kiwi Island pop-up market in the 7Stern Café gives a small insight. 15 established as well as (still) unknown labels offer their own fashion, accessories and food in a relaxed atmosphere. Sophie Soufflé, whose record-disc-dishes are already well-known by ambitious market visitors, will also be there, just like the newcomer Paddy Artist, who creates small works of art by finishing mobile phone covers with acrylic varnish and Swarovski stones.

Day of action for safety
Well, this tip is here because someone recently tried to break into the home of a CitySpotterGirl co-worker. And since this doesn't happen rarely in Vienna, the Wien Energie-Haus organises a day of action on the subject. There will be demonstrations of door locks, security doors, alarm systems and safes. We can discover how easy it is to break into some apartments – and the criminal police advisory centre shows how we can protect ourselves. At the end, a lecture tells about "Vienna's dark side – spectacular breakins of the 19th century."

Suzanne Vega
Ahoy, dear nostalgia flashback! It will surely hit music fans hard when Suzanne Vega sets foot on stage. She's been a big name in the business ever since the 80s, we could almost hum hits such as "Tom's Diner" or "Luka" in our sleep. During her show in Vienna, evergreens mix with current songs: a brand new album just came out some time ago. Don't worry, the Vega-style is still more than present: the catchy yet cool voice and the drama free performances that nonetheless never passes on big emotions. Tonight in the Szene Wien.

The 27 Club
What do Janis Joplin and Amy Whinehouse, Kurt Cobain and Jim Morrison all have in common? They had music in their blood, they lived on the edge – and died at the young age of 27. Now, a homage to the members of the 27 Club and a trip to the best moments of rock'n'roll will take the stage in Vienna. 13 musicians will resurrect their idols and sing all their greatest hits, from Jimi Hendrix's Purple Haze to Janis Joplin's Piece of My Heart. It is almost as if the legends themselves were playing together in a great band. And with good reason: legends never die!

Ströck Feierabend
Well, it’s really buzzing! Since the place opened up two weeks ago, one has to fight to find a table. But it's worth it! The bakery Ströck has opened its first restaurant next to one of its stores – urban, chic, inviting. Bread plays the leading role on the menu, from the bread salad with a wild herb dressing to the fried chicken that was coated in special breadcrumbs (it actually tastes different). The ingredients come from small organic farms, the vegetables from their own garden in the 22nd district. Everything tastes great, and the service remains super friendly despite all the stress. Thank you!
