"Heya Girls!"
Despite my notorious good mood, I sometimes get grumpy. At the coffeehouse for instance, when I must beg for every ounce of sugar. Where have the good old sugar dispensers gone? There are only paper bags everywhere now, each filled with three crumbs of sugar. What a waste of paper! Or at the electronic shop: since the GPS’ cable is loose, I need to buy a new device. So, it makes me all the happier that more and more people in our city are changing their way of thinking. Good example: the Recycling-Kosmos. This residents’ initiative aims to revive the Ottakringer Street through maintenance works. Instead of empty stores, a colourful reparation cluster should appear in the district. In addition to this, a varied programme on the theme of waste avoidance and resources will be presented. Every Wednesday, there is repairing advice, on every Thursday a clothes-art-sewing-café, where old things turn into new favourite items. Another nice example? Just scroll down to the Shop of the Week!

Wishing you a nice week

Sale days at Schuhe für Frauen
When it comes to fashion, winter is already over. Even if in real life, we’re still stomping through snow, all shops are already showing their spring collections. Is it even still worth it to buy new winter shoes? Well at Schuhe für Frauen it is, since during sale days, all models from last season are reduced by up to 50%! And incidentally, we can also start admiring the new models and look forward to spring. Also in the shop: stockings from France and bags from Switzerland. Very chic.

Dawa
A Viennese acoustic-folk-rock-and-a-lot-more-band: this is how the band describes itself. John’s soulful voice and Babsi’s singing, Laura strokes her cello impulsively, Norbert contributes with lively rhythms. They’ve gotten rid of their insider’s tip status after supporting The Cranberries, the band now gives a very special concert in Vienna. The session takes place in total darkness! This way, the hearing is sharpened and the calm-emotional, at times critical-angry tones flow gently into the visitors. Listen to a sample here.

 Deborah Sengl
Deborah Sengl: The Last Days of Mankind
Gruesome, brilliant and absolutely fascinating! With 200 dissected white rats, Deborah Sengl stages 44 scenes from Karl Kraus’ “The Last Days of Mankind”. The outbreak of World War I is turning 100 this year, this classic recaptures the atmosphere of the time particularly well. The Viennese artist reinterprets it now: with the drawings and paintings, the rats bring an unpleasant past back to life. (The animals are feeding rats, they weren’t killed for art). The show will be opened today by Federal President Heinz Fischer.

Block44
Bikes, fashion & coffee! This is the hip combo that will be served at “Block44” today. With this brand new concept store (opening is today!), three established creative labels have settled down together in the Reindorfgasse. In the future, fashionistas will go on pilgrimage there to buy creations from “amateur”.  Two-wheeler-rompers are also well off in this Block: “FixDich”, the track bike boutique, offers cool stuff related to bicycles. And after shopping? One can simply visit the third member of the trio, the café “Setz dich”. A very nice mix off the beaten tracks!

Chicklit turns 2
There is twice as many reasons to party today! Firstly, because after a long break, Vienna finally has a feminist bookshop again with ChickLit. And then, because the shop with its fine range of women’s literature, theories about emancipation, thrillers, sci-fi and politics, celebrates its second anniversary today! Corks will fly and – of course – the best of women’s literature will be there: Denice Bourbon, diva and columnist, will read from “Cheers!”. And in another corner, ladies will be able to nibble on a delicious buffet and toast the birthday child with wine or beer.

wiener.wald.fiction
What happens when Ödön von Horvath meets Quentin Tarantino? wiener.wald.fiction! das.bernhard.ensemble (with Doris Schretzmayer!) lets two titans loose with “Pulp Fiction” and “Geschichten aus dem Wienerwald” (Stories from the Vienna Woods). The result: an aesthetically cheap and morally offensive story in theatre form. With tongue in cheek, of course. There is the solarium owner Sonnenkönig, his underworld dealings and his daughter Mia, who doesn’t want to partake in this world of sex and crime. Absolute “trash-theatre”, with lots of laughs!

Keep Calm & Heart Fashion Show
Vienna’s fashion offspring like it colourful! To find out how much, one simply has to head to the casual event venue Hundsturm. Three young lady designers, freshly out of fashion school, are coming together for a joint fashion show. The gang, composed by the duo H-anna and Irina J, shows nice wearables: everyday fashion and street style, evening and cocktail dresses. The show takes place twice today, dancers and other live acts provide for entertainment. It is worth getting styled up, dear ladies: at the end, the best visitor outfits will be elected.

Vegan Ball
Cashew cream with brittle and berry stew, tender wheat risotto with grilled seitan, paprika curry soup and pea soup in a smoked tofu wrap. The vegetable 4-course meal conjured up by gourmet chef Johann Schwarz in the Arcotel looks so delicious on paper. This he will do at the Vegan Ball, where the booming lifestyle will be celebrated: with champagne reception, ball music, DJs, clubbing and a surprise star guest. The hungry can choose the exquisite menu, ladies with small appetites can grab vegan snacks. Then, off to the dance floor with a vegan cocktail in hand: tonight it is about dancing, dancing, dancing.

Paul Pizzera
Never heard of him? Then you should absolutely change that, because Paul Pizzera is the high-flyer of the Austrian cabaret scene. The neat young man is only 25 years old, he presents his second programme starting now every Sunday at Niedermair. It’s called “Sex, Drugs & Klei’n’Kunst” and tells about the seemingly never-ending hurdles of everyday life. Paul stumbles upon them, simply dreamy and dreamily simple, his love is the stage, his drug is music, cabaret his life. Wielding an electric guitar, a sharp pen and an overdose of self-irony. Verdict? Funny!

Super Bowl Party
Admittedly, the sport is somewhat complex. But when one finally gets it (and it isn’t more complicated than the stupid offside rule in European football), there is hardly a sport that is more exciting than American football. It seems more and more people in Vienna think so too, since today, the Super Bowl will be aired at multiple locations: fans can cheer in the Burgkino (for free!), in the Sargfabrik and at the Arcotel, there will be a buffet alongside the transmission and in 9er Bräu, the best beer will be served during touchdowns. Well then: Seattle Seahawks vs Denver Broncos!

Tangoing into the new week! Every Monday evening, ladies can dive into South American flair at the Tango Lounge. For beginners or those with rusty legs, the lesson (práctica) with Jasmin Katharina starts at 19:30. Things get serious at 21:00 with milonga. In the Tango club in an old factory building, various DJs spin, and next to tango, you can also slide over the dance floor to vals and milonga. Those who don’t want to dance (yet), but would like to watch, don’t have to pay an entrance fee. Motivated dancers can also get discounts through the membership.

Tilly Losch & Hedy Pfundmayr
Invented in 1927, and still unique: many years ago, Tilly Losch and Hedy Pfungmayr developed dances that focus on the hands. The two ballerinas of the Vienna State Opera only showed two hands that moved in rhythm in the spotlight. This inspired numerous renowned photographers: Grete Kolliner, Trude Fleischmann or Rudolf Koppitz took pictures of them. Many of those pictures, which sometimes show the private life of the dancers, then again show them on stage, can now be seen in an exhibition. Please call the gallery before stopping by!

The camellias are blooming
The camellias are amongst the prettiest and most elegant early bloomers and are – which is little-known – a tea bush plant. During the 19th century, they were the “dernier cri” for the high society, self-respecting members of the European courts adorned their table with camellias for dinners. Currently, in Schönbrunn Palace’s big Palm House, visitors can admire splendid camellias and azaleas from the collections of the Bundesgärten – in full bloom. How about a trip into spring – in Vienna’s largest, pleasantly warm greenhouse?

Free trial workshop self-presentation
When do I appear self-confident? When do I appear insecure? What signals do I send out and how are they interpreted by others? And anyway: do I even come across the way I want to? Mid-February, CitySpotterGirl experts Czanik and Damm are organizing an interesting seminar on the subject of self-presentation – perception by others. Those who want to have a quick look can do so for free today – and find out, how building and strengthening it can be to see oneself through somebody else’s eyes for once. Afterwork meditation
Going home for the day calm and relaxed! That’s often hard to do: the head stays in the hectic working day, thoughts are restless. Trainer Sandra von Inten shows how to consciously switch off in this meditation unit. Every Wednesday, she offers guided sessions and gives practical tips for a stress-free everyday life. The exercises are those so-called Lamrim meditations, which are known as the basis of Kadampa Buddhism to insiders. But it doesn’t matter if you’re an expert or a beginner, a one-time visitor or a regular: everyone is invited to partake in these evenings.

Lunzers Maß-Greißlerei
Old grocery shop reloaded! With her new “Greißlerei”, Andrea Lunzer brings a brilliant concept to Austria. There, packaging mania is forsworn, all groceries in the pretty store are “unwrapped”: the honey is in the container, sweet potatoes in the bag and flour, pasta and spices in glasses. There’s also cheese, fruits and oil. All bio, of course! One brings her own dishes to get the exact desired quantity weighted. (If need be, there are paper bags available at the shop). The pack service is also convenient: simply hand in a shopping list in the morning, and pick everything up in the evening.

essenti
Office-caballeros such as the CitySpotterGirl are really grateful that so many nice and convenient snack places have opened up in Vienna in the last few years. There is now one more – and it plays in its own league: essenti, in the romantic Servitengasse, is almost the ideal version of the “quick” pub. Chef Marko Godinic, who used to work at Orlando di Castello, is a fantastic cook – and prepares just the right lunch-potpourri: real creative salads, self-baked sweetcorn bread and warm meals (yum, cranberry chicken), that simply taste so good. And well, the place also looks nice. Of course!
