"Heya Girls!"
There are women, enviable women, who just don´t let anyone interfere in their business. Lillian Bassmann was such a woman. In the 1940s she revolutionized fashion photography because she refused to photograph frills and buttons. Instead she preferred to catch the aura of a dress and developed a photographic style which is trend-setting until today. The New York artist and art director of „Junior Bazaar“ also vehemently translated her image of women into practice. “Until the 1940s women were just ornaments of their husbands, for conversation and cooking. I passionately revolted against this idea”, she later reported to the SZ journal. She ended her legendary career in the early 1970s during a shooting for Vogue: “I wanted to photograph a woman and they sent a child”. She packed her photographic negatives in a bag and believed them to be forgotten forever. Until the 1990s when a neighbour found her work and when Bassmann discovered digital photography – the beginning of the comeback of the grand old lady in fashion photography. Starting Wednesday, her pictures can be seen in the Kunst Haus Wien!

Wishing you a lovely week

Exploring the city – this is the motto of the urbanize! festival. A varied program with urban amusements is offered for more than one week: movies, lectures, interactive events. Under this year´s theme “Safe City”, Max Edelbacher, former Head of the Security Office Vienna, takes you around the sites of real and imagined crime on a bus+stop tour. The “unknown hinterland” of the Ottakringer Straße can be discovered on foot and in the psycho-geographic bicycle workshop you get to know Vienna´s urban landscapes on tour.

Cosima von Bonin
The year 2014 has lost the plot! The CitySpotterGirl agrees, but this time we are talking about the title of the most extraordinary exhibition currently on display in Vienna. The mumok presents the largest exhibition of works by the German artist Cosima von Bonin to date in Austria. And this means: many colourful, huge, floppy cuddly toys are crowding the museum. And quite a few of those cuddly monsters are throwing up. Bonin´s art skilfully defies any interpretation. It´s interesting to observe the reactions created by crabs, bunnies and rocket chicken: from humour to mercy.

Tonight Ute Bock will appear in public for the first time after her stroke rehabilitation. The occasion: The initiative “Bock auf Kultur” is coming up with an absolute premiere – for the first time they are organizing an Ute Bock Ball! It takes place in the Weltmuseum Wien, which is an explanation for the dress code: festive dresses from all over the world. Alongside the inauguration by Ute Bock, the African dancers “Drum Bock”, Roma musicians and the local bands „Klangkombinat Kalksburg“ and „Koenigleopold“ will perform. Of course 100% of the returns will be donated to the Ute Bock Refugee Project!

Flea market Burgtheater
The Burgtheater is being mightily cleared up! And this time we are not talking about directors and money, but about housewife-like tidying up and creating room. Everything that gathers in an enormous theatre is sold: programme booklets, signed programme photos, a huge selection of costumes and props, theatre make-up, masks, plaster heads and technical equipment, like a discarded dimmer system, amplifiers, speakers and lighting equipment. But it only lasts 2 hours!

Today it seems to be flea market day in Vienna ;-) This one, anyhow, is very unusual, because, as the name suggests, visitors start strolling around not until the evening. From 5pm till 11pm ordinary goods, such as clothes or records, as well as unique items found in the treasure troves of the attics, are being sold in the former Ankerbrotfabrik. A few young designers will also sell nice stuff. Offering drinks and food in a relaxed environment, the Moonlightlounge ensures an eased atmosphere, topped off with live-concerts. And “Uber” takes guests to the bazaar and back home for free!

Mushroom hike
Let´s go mushroom-picking, ladies! This year´s rainy summer blessed us with lots of mushrooms. And now it´s exactly the right time to set out on a search for the last porcini mushrooms and chanterelles with the help of an expert. And that you can find splendid pieces in the region around Vienna, is demonstrated by Alexander Urban from the Institute of Botany: his mushroom hike in the Hagenbachklamm (after Klosterneuburg) is all about picking, explaining and talking – to avoid any nasty surprise when eating the mushroom goulash!
Meeting point: entrance Hagenbachklamm, between Maria Gugging and St. Andrä Wördern. October 12. 9:30. 4€. Web

 No Lights No Lycra
No Lights, no Lycra
Dance like no one is watching! In a cold night of the year 2009 people in Melbourne for the first time danced in a dark church – today the movement has spread all over the world. And now for the first time Vienna will turn off the lights for No Lights, no Lycra. The emptied brut-Saal will be open for a dancing event where on Sunday afternoon everyone is invited to dance herself free from all the troubles of the week, an hour long, unobserved and without any embarrassment. No dress code, no show dancing, no drugs. Everyone dances just for herself – and is yet not alone!

Shooting stars at the Sofienalpe
The public stars evening at the Sofienalpe is a nice idea. The very top of the Sofienalpe offers an impressing view of the starlit sky, under somewhat better conditions than in (the too brightly illuminated) town. Part of the programme is the observation of the most scenic heavenly bodies in the autumn sky with high-performance telescopes, accompanied by individual and professional explanations. It´s not necessary to bring your own telescope since the Association for Astronomy is taking a mobile observatory to the Sofienalpe.

Marissa Nadler
Very melancholic, very poetic: Marissa Nadler is one of the best performers when it comes to dark indie folk. The American taught herself to play the guitar when she was 14; however, she completely (and successfully) devoted herself to arts for many years. Not until the year 2004 she exchanged her paint brush for a microphone. Since then she is singing magic, often gloomy melodies about death, about the writers Virginia Woolf and Sylvia Path, about the heavy burdens of life. But don´t be afraid: It´s not going to be a depressive concert tonight, Nadler´s new album “July” is full of beautiful songs. Click here to listen.

Shaken, not stirred
James Bond, best-known womanizer and saviour of the world made it to the cinemas the first time in 1962. Since then, 23 Bond-movies have been produced. And the title songs were always performed by world-famous singers or bands, like Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones, Nancy Sinatra, Tina Turner, Madonna and Adele. No wonder that nearly all Bond-songs became a hit! The well-known Viennese pianist Bela Koreny now rearranged all 23 titles and will present this cocktail for the first time together with 3 powerful-voiced women: Maya Hakvoort, Sandra Pires und Nazide Aylin.

Trees in knitted clothing are adorning the townscape for quite some time now. From today on, Alsergrund will present new eye-catchers, namely trees wrapped in felt! Some selected trees in the Kolingasse will be given a dress of felt. This cheery colourful project was initiated by the two ladies of Ladenkonzept together with the artist Lin Tschi Gerlinde Hirt. Since September the creative heads of Vienna are busily felting, without setting any limits to their creativity. Today, the individual pieces, sized 20-25 cm, will be wrapped around the trees together.

Evita Peron
A comic, bitter-sweet satire about the meanness of power and imperiousness: Maria Eva Duarte, one of the most glamorous characters of the last century, takes centre stage in the Ateliertheater tonight. In this black comedy, Copi – a well-known comic artist who emigrated from his home country Argentina to live in Paris – draws a completely different picture of the “holy” Evita. The casting also seems quite promising: drag artist Lucy McEvil is brilliant in the role of Evita, Peron is played by director Hubsi Kramar himself.

Reinfried Blaha and Victoria Reitter spent 12 months travelling from Mexico to Nicaragua – an adventure trip of a very different kind, since Reinfried Blaha is bound to a wheelchair. Whole Europe out of a cup of coffee! This is possible in the new kaffemik in the Zollergasse where five young software designers and one barista opened up a small puristic café. Coffee lovers can try out a new blend every month. The coffee shop appears rather minimalistic and handmade; the coffee from Ireland, Denmark or the Czech Republic carries the scent of the vast Europe. It is not without reason that the kaffemik is named after the Greenlandic coffee party. Apart from that, there is the usual choice of lemonades, teas, beers and sweets from Tart’ a tata. Great!
