"Heya Girls!"
There are a few events that year after year simply fill us with joy. The blickfang is one of them. The design exhibition showcasing furniture, fashion and jewellery once again turns the MAK into a temporary design store for three days. At no other time of the year will you see as much of young fashion and design on a single spot in Vienna. 130 international designers present their fashion, furniture, lighting and jewellery creations, organise fashion shows and sell their collections directly on-site. Surprises are pre-programmed: Jonas Schroeder, founder of the furniture label Joval, will present his foldable shelf. The Munich fashion label Milli Monka combines high fashion with street wear. 8pandas produces recyclable dishes that even look good. And Vöslauer´s special exhibition „Upcycling“ demonstrates how beautiful (and creative) the recycling of seemingly useless stuff can be. To cut a long story short: a must-go for individualists!
Wishing you a lovely week

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
Throughout his life he suffered from a rare hereditary disease and he never grew taller than 1,52m. This could be an explanation for the pithy characterisation and the deep insights into human psychology provided by his paintings. Celebrating the painter´s 150th anniversary, a comprehensive retrospective for the first time includes some of the lesser known works of the famous post-impressionist: snapshots and milieu studies of sad clowns, lonely maids, untamed horses and somewhat lost creatures of the underworld. Touching, tragic, beautiful.

Organic potatoes from Waldviertel
5 kilos of best- quality organic potatoes from the Waldviertel for only 4.80 euros? Yes, no kidding – even if the story behind is a sad one. Organic farmers in the Waldviertel often have sales difficulties because organic supermarkets buy cheap products from Italy. The “Leiterwagerl”, actually an online shop for vegans, is bringing the potatoes to Vienna this Monday. The tasty Waldviertel potatoes are sold on the Naschmarkt, at the location of Saturday´s flea market: organic and super cheap. There are also onions and apples. But don´t forget to pre- order online!

Do women manage differently?
We claim: yes! The business talk of “Frau im ÖGV” titled “Do women manage differently?” will get to the bottom of the gender debate. Dominance versus consensus based solutions? Hard figures versus humanity? These are interesting challenges in daily business life, often tackled differently by men and women. How differently men and women actually act, will be discussed by selected experts. In a courageous, open and honest way. For example by Evelyn Kalcher, head of the first job portal for women, or by Anna Steiger, vice- rector for personnel of the TU Vienna. An evening full of interesting information and advice.

Herbal walk in the Prater
Wild mint, monks cress, garlic mustard. The selection of indigenous medicinal and wild herbs is remarkable - even in autumn! To make sure that only good herbs land in our cooking pots, herb educator Katharina Helmreich invites to a walk through the Prater. There she will demonstrate that even in town you can easily discover and collect quite an amount of fine herbs. Wild and medicinal herbs do not only smell and taste good. They are also full of vitamin C and minerals. How to use each of the plantlets best, won´t be kept as a secret neither. Don´t forget to wear sturdy shoes!

format postcard
For those of you who don´t remember: Yes, there was life before the invention of emails. Closely considered, something similar to emails already existed 100 years ago: the postcard. From 1900 onwards, post was delivered seven times a day (!) in Vienna and post cards were flying through town just as their digital successors do nowadays. Starting today, the photo institute Bonartes presents postcards of the years 1900- 1936 as a medium of everyday culture. It also shows that illegal pirate copies are not an invention of the 21st century. Even back then, beautiful postcard were shamelessly copied ;-)

Great fabric stores are not rare in Vienna anymore, but this is the one we have been waiting for! Opened up in summer, “quilted” in the Brünnerstraße surprises with abundant elegance and flair: expansive rooms, dark parquet and more than 800 special patchwork and quilt fabrics. The fabulous designer fabrics are of pure cotton. Most of them come from America, the home country of quilting and are full of vivid patterns. A dream for patchworkers! And those who are not professionals yet, can learn the basics in workshops like „Quilt Sound of the City“.

Mama Liu & Sons
Good heavens! This looks devilishly good! Brick walls decorated with frescoes that look like tattoos, massive wooden tables, a bar made of stainless steel plates – mum and sons converted the visually rather unappealing Liounge, run by the family for years, into Vienna´s hippest Chinese restaurant. The specialty of the house is still the same: The hot pot, a Chinese fondue, where countless ingredients are cooked in hot soup on the table. If you don´t have that much time, you choose one of the delicious Dim Sun, vegetable dishes or soups. Yummy!
