And since on this occasion 23 artists will grant insights into their atelier, you will have the opportunity to visit textile artist Birgit Schlarmann today. Which can be highly recommended: Birgit Schlarmann brings to life gorgeous flowers that will never wither. Lush roses, anthuriums or forget-me-nots made of filt are artfully embroidered by hand with colourful pearls and little accessories – and manufactured into lovely bracelets, rings or brooches.

Summer Cinema in the Castle
The cinema season has begun in Schloss Neugebäude. Until 28 August movie hits from the current cinema season will be shown in the courtyard of this huge renaissance castle. At Vienna’s only summer cinema with blockbusters, you sit on sofas and armchairs, and if it rains a roof will be put up. Tonight you can see “Rise up! And Dance”, tomorrow Leonardo diCaprio will perform the “Wolf of Wall Street”. George Clooney, Matt Damon and Michael Douglas can also be seen on screen during the summer. Every Monday is discount day and tickets cost only €6.

LiLa – the Indian Jazz Project
What happens if a local band of jazz musicians meets two exceptional musicians from Rajasthan? Indian rhythms meet Western harmonies, composed arrangements form an improvised whole and music from different continents creates something entirely new. The sound ranges from delicately woven sound textures to explosively colourful rhythms – the world of Indian gypsies has arrived in Vienna. The whole thing is called Lila (the Sanskrit word means “play”), can be experienced live at Porgy today and be tried out here. Heart-warming music!

Midsommar Celebration
Hej, hej! Today Sweden celebrates the longest day of the year: midsommar. And – for the first time – Vienna will join the celebration. Including all customs, culinary delights and Viking chess. First people decorate and erect the midsommar stång together under the open sky. Then they dance around it, exactly: what IKEA calls “hopping about” ;-) Skandibok will set up a full book table, “Fröken Lakrits” will provide original Swedish Godis. And afterwards there’s köttbullar, sill and korv, complemented with liquor or öl (beer). Skal!

Wine Restaurant in Residence
You gladly follow wonderful Viennese wine-maker Jutta Ambrositsch- Kalchbrenner everywhere she goes. For a few years she had established her temporary wine tavern at Kamaldulenserhof, now she has found a new home in the middle of Grinzing. Virtually in the heart of the district of wine taverns (and yet so well hidden that no tourist busses will invade it) she will inhabit the abandoned traditional tavern “Zum Guten Grinzing” for several weeks a year. With an old bar, wonderfully simple food and “Gemischter Satz” (field blend). Viennese bliss for the 21st century!

Bicycle Picnic

Field and Farm Festival
This is nature! Between the Danube branches Schillerwasser and Mühlwasser in the Lobau there will be a big celebration today: organic farm Polzer-Puk, Vienna’s oldest organic farm, and all local associations invite everyone to a jolly get-together. Apart from wellies throwing, water fight, wheelbarrow race and “carry raw milk home in an enamel can”, there’s also a Neapolitan puppet master, live bands and a raffle. And of course tours of the fields and the farm’s initiatives. Additionally culinary delights such as farmer’s sushi or tofu skewers are offered.

Fashion invasion! At Wubet and at Mühlbauer, at Samstag and at Madame with a mission: about twenty trendy Viennese shops will now be occupied for ten days – by graduates of fashion school Hetzendorf who will present and sell a selection of their designs there. Eva Stiasny will take up residence in a corner of Verhutung, Daryn Chook’s fashion will be dangling at Modus Vivendi. Well then, put on sturdy shoes and walk along the junior-design path in the city: the round tour will start tonight with cool drinks and a sneak preview in the new office of Austrian Fashion.

Absolute architecture: international star architect, designer, artist, educator and visionary Hans Hollein was among the pioneers of the postmodern era: his analysis of “the man-made space” is viewed as a groundbreaking statement. The MAK dedicates a large exhibition to the recently deceased architect and grants comprehensive insights into his complete works. Materials from the sole Austrian winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize that for the most part have never been publicly shown before will be displayed: working models, original drawings, notes, sketches, photographs and films. The audience will explore scenes of eerie happenings in the city centre: they will hear eye witnesses tell of strange, magic and mystical things and see shamans, fortune-tellers and ghostbusters like the Vienna Ghosthunters perform and hear stories about their magic experiences and mysterious abilities. We definitely haven’t seen Vienna like this before!

The annual dividend distribution of the University of Applied Arts is on the agenda as of today – in the form of the most important works created during the academic year 2014. From architecture, industrial design, graphic arts, stage design, design and media design, selected works will be displayed in the exhibition “The Essence 14”. Directly before the opening there will be lectures about restoration. And the aftershow party will get started from 23:00 at “Ludwig und Adele”. From “Perfume” scent bags with organic Styrian lavender to the “Sweet Tooth” napkin to the “Sunshine” backpack, you will find lovingly designed items, sewn by hand in small-scale series. We office mouses are pretty spoilt lately. Everywhere creative lunch restaurants open and provide us with healthy food. (Which is why the CitySpotterGirl – shhht, that’s a secret – is working on a new book!) Brand new and fortunately very close to the editorial office it’s Mr and Mrs Feelgood. The former general manager of Café Français has teamed up with a nutrition trainer and turned the former Spirali into a bright, chic organic restaurant. Here particularly easily digestible and high-energy curries, soups, sandwiches and salads are produced daily – to take away or to eat there. You have to try the cheesecake!
