"Heya Girls!"
There are voices you can't forget. When I heard it for the first time, I thought that this voice belonged to an at least fifty-year-old jazz singer, who had been through much and had drunk lots of whiskey. When I saw her for the first time, it turned out the lady was a beauty with almond eyes, who had only just turned twenty. In 2003, Amy Winehouse released her first single. What then followed was a typical superstar life of our time: 25 million records sold, drugs, scandals, anorexia, death. She died at the age of 27. The Jewish Museum Vienna now portrays the musician in a way hardly anyone knows her: deeply rooted in the Jewish history of her family, which emigrated from Belarus to Great Britain a hundred years ago. The record collection of her youth can be seen, a suitcase full of family photos and pictures of a young carefree woman – who weaved songs between jazz and soul with her incredible voice.

Viennese women's film festival
Actually, we should go to the cinema every evening this week – because the Frauenfilmtage (the Viennese women's film festival) starts today! With Austrian premieres, unknown and extraordinary films and an emphasis on female artists in films. The 24 movies and documentaries come from different countries and have won multiple awards. Especially charming: Gabrielle. Especially fascinating: Brigitte Kramer's complex documentary about the famous choreographer Sasha Waltz.

Let's go, the round dance to celebrate Women's Day has now started! 7 women from 3 continents raise their voices today in the famous PEN Club. These authors and scientists read extracts from their books and give lectures at this free event. Such as Luisa Beatriz Futoransky, one of Argentina's most important poets. Her compatriot Diana Raznovich shows the different aspects of female humour. Ishraga M. Hamid comes from Sudan, now lives in Austria and speaks about the equilibrium between two worlds. And then: a small buffet awaits!

A glance into Vienna's trendy future: local young fashion designers present themselves today at MOYA. Around 30 students of the fashion school Herbststrasse will show their original small collections during this graduation fashion show. All produced for a particular theme, transposed into plans by the students themselves and then crafted in small workshops. Individual uniques sweep cheerfully on the catwalk: young designer Anna Scheiber transforms abstract geometry into a hip look, Asanbekova presents the gap between homesickness and wanderlust in a material manner. Cool!

Furies and princesses
So, today is Women's Day. That means: there are again lots of events in our honour. For example, an extensive trip into the feminine past - and its portrayal in the arts - is offered by four exciting special tours at the Art History Museum. They're about furies, princesses and other famous women, the role of women in Ancient Egypt and Amazons and other strong women in ancient times. The proceeds from these tours will support projects from CARE for the empowerment of women. More Women's Day events can be found online: here.

Cut & Take
Taste a piece of art-cake?  This can only be done at the finissage of Viktor Svikis' exhibition "Nuts and bolts". This one-time occasion to purchase pieces of his original floor installation at attractive prices will only last two hours! They fit well in the living room of those who like detailed and unusual art: Viktor Svikis' drawings are characterized by a comics and graffiti-like reduction. That's what the artist, born in Riga, is known for, as well as for his photorealistic still lives. Cut & take, dear art-loving gourmets!

Photo Brunch
What a nice combo! Daniel Auer wants to entice us into photography with treats. This means concretely: while he shows how to tell a story with pictures, Sabine Dobesberger serves a fine 5-elements brunch. The variety is huge: sweet potatoes with ginger and coconut milk, beetroot salad with apples, nuts and rocket, sour cherry-muffins, goat cheese-thyme spread, quinoa with wok vegetables. All this and even more will be enjoyed, while the master photographer reveals his artistic tips and tricks during slide shows and discussions.

Vienna – Berlin
The comparison is still quite popular, in fact they had a lot in common at the end of the 19th century: Vienna and Berlin were both aspiring metropolises. But in really different ways, as an exhibition at the Belvedere shows: the American-looking metropolis Berlin with its wild Dada movement and Vienna, the city of operettas with its baroque character and its decadence. From the beginning of the 20th century to the interwar period, parallels and differences are pointed out - with works of Otto Dix, Anton Kolig, Raoul Hausmann.

What you've always wanted to know
Writing emails, sending pictures, reading the CitySpotterGirl newsletter – it is now almost impossible to escape computers. But how can we secure data reliably? What's the difference between the different browsers? How do we install new programs? As a part of the initiative Recycling-Kosmos, a series of information courses starts today, for beginners and all those who finally want to ask about what they've always wanted to know about computers. Showing and learning will happen in small groups, every session focuses on another topic.

Holler My Dear
Oh yeah, this music really puts in a good mood! The aspiring Austro-Russian-Denglish band "Holler My Dear" just looks so playful and fun. The self-declared Berliner town musicians formed a group around an Austrian lady: Laura Winkler lends her voice to the folky-jazzy acoustic pop music. The band turns it sometimes into Motown-tango, sometimes into Western Klezmer. Listen to a sample here, and experience them live tonight: the band plays at the accordion festival. Namely at a double concert, since the Prozorov Trio will be next.

Kunstrausch
Wow, this will surely be laid-back! At Kunstrausch, creative people will be painting live for the win. Paintings will be created in an unusual way: six artists will compete at a time in this "live competitive painting", in rounds of 20 minutes. Elisabeth Hauser for example will be there, who strives to capture life with her paintings, as well as Martina Reinhart who presents an enchanted reality. The public sends their favourites into the finale, the paintings will be auctioned at the end. The "art frenzy" touches all the senses: the painting will be accompanied by electronic sounds and violin music.

Viennese celebrities at the Adriatic
Holiday flair with nostalgia: in "Wien entdeckt das Meer" (Vienna discovers the sea), the beginnings of Austrian tourism in Istria and Dalmatia are shown. Matching the exhibition, there are two free lectures today. First, one can follow the tracks of Viennese celebrities at the Adriatic: Ludwig Salvator, Billroth, Lueger and also the unfortunate Emperor of Mexico, Ferdinand Maximilian, honoured the place with their presence. From the top of the monarchy to the ocean view for the Viennese middle classes: Desirée Vasko-Juhasz tells about the grand hotel of the imperial Austrian Southern Railway.

Yep, gourmets will get their money's worth today! The town hall transforms into the largest bakehouse in Vienna - and everyone can try out all of Vienna's bakeries (for free!). The best bread will be elected at the 2nd Viennese Bread Award: along with celebrities and professionals, the public will judge eight different sorts of bread and pastry. Savoury and creative, but also classics such as Semmerl (round bread roll) and pretzel sticks. Particularly interesting for the CitySpotterGirl: the category "Culinary Heritage Austria", a selection of the best traditional handmade sorts of bread.

Ganymed goes Europe
Living paintings! Three years ago, it was a sensational success – now, "Ganymed" returns to the Art History Museum. 14 authors were once again invited to write texts about a masterpiece in the art gallery - authors such as Peter Esterhazy, Maja Haderlap and Josef Winkler. Actors and dancers perform these pieces in the centre of the museum. During the tour across the halls, visitors can choose themselves how long they want to stay in each room. On every Ganymed evening, all pieces are performed at the same time and several times in a row.

Awareness&Consciousness
The label already exists since 2005, now a&c will finally open up its own store! In the small, bright shop in the Lindengasse, the new spring/summer collection is already available: the Limited Silk Edition. This time, Christiane Gruber hasn't only coloured jersey, but has also subjected silk to its very own special colouring process. The result: a small series of flowing and beautiful unique items that almost look like paintings with their red-purple or grey-blue colour shades. And by the way: the shop opening will be celebrated on 6 March at 18:00!

Purple Eat
It hardly gets more unusual than that. Or more lovable. The association Purple Sheep, with Karin Klaric and their Freunde-Schützen-Haus (“Protect Friends House”), helps well integrated asylum seekers who are threatened with deportation. Now, the association also runs a pub on the Meidlinger market where asylum seekers cook meals from their home country. Different exciting things are served every day for a donation: Chinese roast pork, Georgian mushroom goulash, samosas. It tastes good, it's organic, it doesn't cost much and it helps the association.
