editorial

"Heya Girls!"
Same procedure as every year before Christmas: The editorial team is so busy, that I hardly find time to eat. And then, late at night, when I exhaustedly sink into my sofa and turn on the TV for a few minutes – guess, what I watch? Exactly, cooking shows! I guess that’s called vicarious satisfaction ;-) Jamie Oliver, head chefs on rescue operations, cooking duels – I know every single one of them. This is why I am particularly looking forward to the very special “live” cooking duel taking place on Saturday. As part of the Vienna book fair, the publisher Brandstätter invites to a vegetarian international match: The three chefs and authors of a vegetarian cookbook series – Meinrad Neunkirchner (Vegetarian Austria), Stevan Paul (Vegetarian Germany) and Claudio Del Principe (Vegetarian Italy) are competing against each other. The audience tastes the vegetarian dishes, chooses the best one and selects the winner. I don’t really care about who will rake in the award “Best Vegetarian National Cuisine”. As long as I eventually get some decent food again ;-)

Evening of Dinky Delights
Let’s have a quick glance in the dictionary: dinky means small, personal & neat. This is exactly what the same-named shopping event is like. Five hip Viennese artists and designers will offer their goods for sale. Including Fox on the Rocks or Michelle en Vogue  - with gorgeous jewellery highlights. Or Silvia Gattin’s by now legendary Kilim boots and ethno clutches. And since the pre-Christmas happening is taking place in the truly friendly design hotel The Guesthouse, it’s perfectly fine if we can no longer resist. And risk a dinky glance.

Creating a Sandmandala
The most silent event of the week: four Tibetan monks of the Buddhist exile-monastery Ganden Jangste (India) are visiting Vienna at the moment. Their aim is to raise funds for the maintenance of their monastery. For this purpose, they will spend the next three days constructing a sand mandala in Yak + Yeki. Everyone is invited to watch the monks when they millimetre-precisely lay down dyed sand. Creating these delicate art pieces is a kind of mediation for the monks. Once the mandala is completed, they destroy it – and give it as a present to the visitors on Saturday.

Sandra Gilles „on tour“
Yippee, she is back! For a few days, at least. Until 2012, the designer produced the loveliest nightwear of Vienna in her shop-studio. Then she decided to move to Corsica – and left us nightwear-less behind. Now she is back in her home country for a few days and presents the new homewear pieces of her “nuit blanche” collection and accessories (exquisite iPad covers, scarves and sleep masks). She will start her tour in her former boutique in Lindengasse, one week later she will visit the newly designed rooms of the FeineDinge china factory.

Bosna Quilts
From today on we have the chance to shop and have a look at pretty, colourful quilts. The story behind the art pieces is a touching one: The Bosna Quilt workshop came up in 1993 in a refugee house in Vorarlberg. The Austrian painter Lucia Feinig- Giesinger designs the quilts that are later stitched by Bosnian women. During their life in exile, working was a way to overcome the trauma of war and fleeing. Since 1998, the Bosna Quilt workshop is located in the Bosnian enclave Gorzade, where unemployment rates are still enormously high. The workshop enables 11 women to feed their families.

GoodGoods & Long Night of Design
Katrin Redanitsch and Sofia Podreka are the design office Dottings – and they have their heart on the right place. Together with 9 design teams and 9 protected workshops they manufactured sustainable and incredibly beautiful products for their new label GoodGoods. For example, “Soapdish” – a combination of nail brush and soap dish in cooperation with Blindenwerk, an initiative by the Association of the Blind. Or tremendously stylish baskets (by Madeleine Plass), which can also be used as tables or stools. Or bags by Eva Blut. You can purchase those lovely items online – or tonight during the Long Night of Design (web).

Qigong for your eyes
This may be a good piece of advice for super Blondie Daniela Katzenberger who currently is jetting around the world to discover wellness trends for the German TV channel VOX ;-) However, it surely is a worthy tip for Viennese beauties who spend too much time working in front of a screen and strain their eyes. In a 4-hour-session Ilse Priesching presents eight simple but effective exercises to combat eye strain and tired eyelids. She also explains possible causes and counter measures from a TCM perspective. Relaxing massage techniques for neck and shoulders will contribute to your overall wellbeing. Eye-rolling can be so sexy!

Restaurant Day
Spread love! And open the door of your own kitchen! One of the nicest trivialities on Earth is uniting the whole globe today: good food. The idea of the Restaurant Day, a Finnish invention, is that each private person or amateur chef can “open” a restaurant or Café for one day. And serve her favourite dishe(s) either in her own home or in a park or on the top of a mountain. Vienna is participating: Barbara & Birgit from the 8th district, for example, are serving multi-culti love scoops in all variations. FotoK awaits guests with autumn soups and twist bread.

Hip & Hop! The debut of the Viennese rapper in 2011 left no doubt: A new female star in the German-speaking hip-hop scene was born. Since then, she made her way to the CitySpotterGirl’s heart and soul. Yasmin Hafedhs tells thrilling stories with lots of emotion and a healthy sense of social criticism. And her distinctive spoken-word-rap remains likeably self-reflexive. She has just revealed her 5 favourite books to the CitySpotterGirl (web). Tonight she will perform live! Ballet-Workshop with Campina
Aplomb! A la seconde! Ballonne! A simple translation for everyone not speaking ballet: The Viennese ballerina Campina is holding four ballet workshops. For all Black Swans wishing to eventually fulfil their childhood dream, to try on a tutu or to pirouette as delicately as possible. The workshop is for all dancing enthusiasts from 6 to 66, also for absolute beginners! It may be too late for a professional career. But is there a greater pleasure than dreaming about it for one day – and, on the side, improving one’s physical and spiritual posture?

The Pearl Fishers
Bizet composed his first opera at a time when exoticism was en vogue. And this is why his Pecheurs de Perles (The Pearl Fishers) are taking opera fans into foreign music worlds and exotic locations. Today is premiere in Vienna! And in a modern way. Since Lotte de Beer, the creative young Dutchwoman, who won fame for her dynamic production of La Bohème, is directing the play. She freely transfers the Pearl Fishers into the present. And she incorporates the exoticism of that time into the hedonistic TV society’s concepts of democracy.

This truly is an unusual flea market! Monika Buttinger, costume designer for a long list of good films, organised a campaign within a minimum of time: She won several renowned film companies over to provide film outfits. And today they can be purchased for a donation! The costumes of Dorfilm, Golden Girls, Novotnyfilm and Aichholzerfilm allow us to fit out ourselves with hip (and unique) new clothes. The proceeds will be donated to the association “Nachbarinnen” which provides young Somali women with health counselling. There’ll also be a buffet.

Barrel-sliding in the monastery
When was this custom actually born? Nobody knows it exactly (anytime around 1813). However, the annual sliding over a 60,000-litre barrel in honour of Saint Leopold is celebrated in the Klosterneuburg monastery from Thursday till Monday. Tasting the wine of the new vintage in the Babenbergerhalle at Townhall Square is also part of the event. The traditional barrel sliding is an adventure for the young and the old. If you slide over the great barrel in the Binderstadl, all your dreams will come true. Well then, let’s start! All proceeds will be donated to the monastery’s initiative for street children.

The Vienna Art Week starts today and the creative hurly-burly will go on until November 23. Under the motto “Running Minds” our perception of the world is brought into question in an artistic way. Extra-performance: Macondo
Macondo-what? Well hidden between the harbour area of Vienna and the Donauufer motorway, you can find a refugee settlement of the 1950s. Today, 3000 asylum seekers from 20 nations are living there in cramped conditions and cope with a life between two cultures. Hardly any Viennese knows this place! Named after a village of Gabriel García Márquez’ novels, the camp has now become the setting of the award-winning film by Sudabeh Mortezai. Based on a boy’s story, she tells about life in Macondo. Together with the actors she will be present in the Gartenbaukino tonight and discuss with the audience.

Love yourself and find the right partner
Every Jack has his Jill. As far as Sabine Standenat is concerned, all Jills should first of all rack their brains and ask themselves some fundamental questions: Who am I? What do I like about myself? What makes me special? Only if Jill has got things straightened out with herself, she will be ready for a solid relationship. In her latest lecture, the CitySpotterGirl expert (web) will explain how to love yourself and how to reduce troublesome blocks and relationship patterns. Plumage – Wings – Feather-light
You should better be an animal lover for this event! From today on, more than 36 artists will “lend wings” to each other in the relatively new OffSpace in the 6th district. Their common topic: feather-light, weightless, birds – across all art forms, such as paintings, ceramics, jewellery and installations. Visual artist Marion Koy displays symbolic oil paintings on canvas. Christine Nebosis “lays her egg” in the form of an extraordinary ceramic sculpture. And fabrics designer Berit Steffin inspires with textile ease. The a-capella choir “Wiener Gackerei” will perform bird songs.

Do you speak housing technology?
Self do, self have! Changing light bulbs is doable. But what if power supply fails or if water in the bathtub does not drain off? Then we ladies might give up. A basic workshop in a caravan will now put an end to this misery. On the one hand, the workshop will equip participants with useful knowledge about household accidents, but it will also – and that’s even more important – teach you how to communicate with plumbers, electricians & Co! Cos they are talking a different language. And communication on an equal basis can work miracles! Not only in your household.

1st Digital Cameras
Back to the future! If we want to be in the picture, we snap digitally nowadays. This was different in the 1980s. In the times when the ordinary mortals’ Internet was hissing and photos were sticked in albums, photo pioneer Lucien Smaha already worked digitally. He was one of the first photographers worldwide experimenting in this field. And he tested the visionary cameras in a field experiment at Kodak. The results? An incredible step forward in technology. And the very first digital photos of the 90s: first “digital” kangaroos, love couples & Co. Now you can admire them in an exhibition!

Since a few days, Vienna has another 1st & 2nd hand boutique. Cafe Z
Earlier, this used to be a confectionary. Famous for its cream slices and frequented by senior citizens. And then Christa Ziegelböck appeared. She “conquered” the closed Café Angelmayer, rebuilt it – and managed what many before her failed to do. In her Café Z, people from the neighbourhood, young scenesters and the old regular guests are sitting harmoniously next to each other and feel comfortable. This is obviously due to the easy-going owner and the cheerful atmosphere. Sitting on vintage furniture, guests enjoy coffee, delicious crepes or lunch menus and are pleased with the low prices. Great tip!
