Pretty and smart! Apart from all the grand cru coffees and the speciality coffees brewed by barista experts, the menu also includes sweet and savoury dishes from Do&Co. Used capsules can be returned in the recycling corner.

Open Day in the Grand Hotel
Honestly, we know far too little about the pompous hotels where normally only VIPs, Mr President and jet set are residing. Celebrating the 150th anniversary of our Ringstraße the Grand Hotel, established in 1870, opens its doors. A perfect opportunity to discover the house’s splendid rooms: Visitors are welcomed by Emperor Franz Josef and after a champagne reception in the ballroom they enter the 220 sqm (!) presidential suite and enjoy the spectacular view from the balcony to the Ring. Even areas that are usually non-accessible, such as the kitchen of the Japanese restaurant Unkai, will be open to the public. Enchanté!
Grand Hotel, Kärntner Ring 9, 1010 Vienna. May 1. 12:00-17:00, first guided tour at 12:25. Free entrance. Web

Zum Gschupftn Ferdl celebrates its 1st birthday
That’s reason to celebrate! The snack bar deluxe for super stylish hipsters, big-city bobos and gourmet junkies is celebrating its 1st birthday and on that occasion it throws a whole suckling pig on the grill! Of course, the Heurigen buffet is perfectly stocked as well, but today’s actual highlight are the 3 “Sängerknaben” from Kollegium Kalksburg who spread charm and humour with their version of the modern Wienerlied and their colleagues from 5/8erl in Ehr’n who generate good mood with their groovy Viennese Soul. Later the Ferdl-All-Star DJs will rock the floor. Happy Birthday!

Craft Beer Festival
Hand-brewed speciality beers in extraordinary flavours are currently the talk of town. And today and tomorrow 118 beers from various European countries and the USA can be tasted in the Wiener Metropol in 3.5-hour-tasting-sessions. The names alone, such as Pale Ale, Faux Pax Framboise Sourbeer or Going Hazelnuts, sound like an exciting taste experience! The speciality brewed by Johannes Grohs from the Beer Store Vienna in the Golser Bier installations is still kept secret. But basil was definitely involved ;-) Cheers!
Metropol, Hernalser Hauptstraße 55, 1170 Vienna. May 2. 14:30-22:00, May 3. 13:30-21:00. 10 € per tasting session. Web

Ja! Natürlich Garden Pop Up Store
Green finger or no green finger: When everything around us is turning green and flourishing, we feel a growing desire for gardening ourselves, at least a bit. Some tasty tomatoes on the balcony or nice-smelling mint on the windowsill are worth a try. Be it strawberries, cabbage or salad, there are many delicate plants that do not need much care nor space. Convinced? Well then, let’s go to the hip rooms of the concept store Sneak In – there you’ll find the entire Ja! Natürlich garden assortment, plus a huge selection of potting compost and seed pots. Until mid May.

Small and pretty with great tradition: We once again have the chance to admire and to buy arts and crafts at Spittelberg – and choose between enchanting pieces: for example handmade yarn buttons by Johanna Arbeithuber (who also showcases handspinning with spinning wheel and spindle). Or jewellery made of turned wood by Bernhard Anzberger. Or crocheted jewellery made of glass pearls by Ingrid Kreissl from Wiener Neustadt. Or Susanne Pregetter’s staghorn carving works – you just have to see her traditional jewellery!

Play Minigolf for free
No ironic grins please! I still think minigolf is cool. Admittedly: hopelessly old-fashioned, but cool. And therefore all the weird minigolfers like me will celebrate Austria’s 6th Minigolf Day today. On almost 30 sites between Alte Donau and Bodensee, people who are interested can play a free round and get secret tips and tricks from local experts on how to hole the ball with as few shots as possible. By the way: despite Austria is quite a small country, it is one of the world’s top professional Minigolf nations! How about that?

Zadie Smith in the Jörgerbad
The CitySpotterGirl is truly excited! One of her favourite authors is in Vienna today for the premiere of her new play “Die Botschaft von Kambodscha”. I’m talking about Zadie Smith, born in 1975 and currently living in New York, who has recently brought heart attacks and lucky moments to readers of her novel “On Beauty” all over the world! Her new play, which, originally enough, is staged in the Jörgerbad (!), is about housekeeper Fatou who tries to swim away her life as a slave in a swimming pool each Monday morning. Great story, great writer!

Max Raabe & Palast Orchester
There was a time when the CitySpotterGirl lived in Berlin and, believe it or not, was actually a close neighbour of the likeable singer with his noble nasal voice! Therefore “One night in Berlin”, the title of his current programme, awakes old memories. But it’s about the 20s! Max Raabe revives the glory of those years and connects them elegantly with the here and now. Gracefully, cheerfully and with a lovingly ironic glance at the chaos of interpersonal relationships. Want to give it a listen? Tonight… But be aware, high risk of earworm infection!

Fresh citrus fruits from Calabria
The sun rises one more time for fans of subtropical fruits: This season’s last delivery of citrus fruits from Calabria arrived in Casa Caria! This is the last chance for gourmets to stock up on cedro citrons with thick peels, juicy “Brasilianes” or sweet “Martisis” and to turn your kitchen into an olfactory orange grove. The CitySpotterGirl’s top gourmet tip: mix the cedro citron zest in a fresh spring salad or, even better, enjoy it pure and slightly marinated as lemon-Carpaccio! Be aware: Only while supplies last.

Hubert Schmalix
He paints wildly and dangerously – although, according to his own words, he is not at all angry, but only concentrated at work ;-) Now for the first time a comprehensive exhibition is dedicated to Hubert Schmalix, born in Graz and now living in California, which shows his “wild years” as well as new, more conceptual works. The CitySpotterGirl is and will remain a fan of his kitschy landscape gouaches that make one believe that Heidi, Alm-Onji and three belling stags will immediately turn the corner. If you prefer it more erotic: There are also loads of nude portraits.

Pizza Quartier
Not very far from here the Viennese pizza wonder was born a few years ago. In the Pizza Mari a pizzaiolo from Napoli baked pizza in a wood-burning oven that tasted as delicious as it usually only does in Italy. After a few stations Mario Siani has taken over a new oven – and takes us even a step closer to pizza-heaven. The maestro now exclusively uses sour dough for his pizzi (fantastically topped with just a few ingredients). You just have to try this! No wonder that on Saturdays the lively Pizza Quartier is bustling like an Italian market square ;-)
